Are you holding Master’s degree and looking for fully funded PhD positions? Newcastle University, England invites online application for multiple funded PhD Programs / fully funded PhD positions in various research areas.

Candidates interested in fully funded PhD positions can check the details and may apply as soon as possible. Interested and eligible applicants may submit their online application for PhD programs via the University’s Online Application Portal.

1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Chemical Engineering

Summary of PhD Program:

Recently the production of constrained nanoparticles via exsolution has been developed as a novel platform to produce tuneable arrays of emergent nanoparticles, intended as catalysts in small-scale devices. Exsolved nanoparticles are socketed and confined into the oxide support surface, a feature that seems to unlock superior functionality inaccessible through conventional synthesis routes. This approach brings new opportunities for the efficient utilisation of biogas as a clean energy source at large scale, including the dry reforming of biogas, which would otherwise rely on expensive platinum-group metals. However, this new class of catalysts still faces scale-up challenges.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Climate justice and youth in Northeast England

Summary of PhD Program:

The School of Geography, Politics and Sociology at Newcastle University invites applications for a doctoral studentship on climate justice and youth in Northeast England. The candidate will be supervised by Dr Catherine Walker, Professor Anoop Nayak and Dr Clifton Evers and will join a vibrant research community with internationally recognised expertise in youth geographies, cultural geographies and creative, community-engaged research. ‘Climate justice’ as a term has been employed by multiple actors, from UN bodies to environmental activists to academic theorists (McGregor and Christie, 2021; Schlosberg and Collins, 2004). Whilst the term has multiple meanings, its core values lie in illuminating the unequal causes and effects of climate change, and allowing individuals to envision courses of action to address these underlying inequalities (Mikulewicz et al., 2023).

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Ecocritical Art History

Summary of PhD Program:

The Department of Fine Art invites applications for a doctoral studentship within the area of ecocritical and environmental art history. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop their own research project in relation to this broad topic. Their research will be supervised by Dr Olga Smith and will relate to her research within the framework of Newcastle University Academic Track (NUAcT) Fellowship on the representations of landscapes in contemporary art, and ecocritical approaches in art history. The aim of this research is to establish a theoretical and aesthetic meeting point for art historical study and the burgeoning concentration of research in environmental humanities.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Cell- and Tissue-targeted cyclic peptide discovery platform

Summary of PhD Program:

Targeted drug delivery is a strategy where medicines (drugs) are specifically delivered to the site of disease in the body. The strategy allows the drug to maintain a local therapeutic concentration at the disease site to act on the target, and avoids any interaction with the healthy tissues – which can otherwise lead to off-target side effects. In this project, we will establish novel strategies to develop bespoke cyclic peptides that bind specific cells / tissues over others with high affinity and selectivity (e.g. cancer vs healthy cells), in order to use them as delivery vehicles for drugs or for bioimaging.

Application Deadline: 3rd March 2024

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Exploiting pleiotropic roles of DNA-PKcs in advanced prostate cancer

Summary of PhD Program:

Are you interested in investigating a key driver of advanced prostate cancer with a view to developing future therapeutics? Prostate cancer kills 12,000 men in the UK each year and requires new, more effective treatments. By therapeutically exploiting common genomic vulnerabilities we have the potential to develop more effective treatments without debilitating side-effects. Crucially, this project will combine contemporary in vitro and in vivo methodologies, including CRISPR knock-in and knockout approaches, to validate susceptibility biomarkers that will enable more effective treatment sequencing to enhance treatment outcomes.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Early Modern Studies – Outsourcing State Censorship

Summary of PhD Program:

Interested in early modern books, print culture and politics? This project investigates how the early modern English state used the book trade guild known as the Stationers’ Company to censor publications. You will work with the Stationers’ Company’s extensive archive (in particular its business records) to explore how it recruited spies and censors and how it went about locating and shutting down forbidden printing. You will also consider the extent to which this involved state appropriation of the traditional regulatory function of the Company.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Civil Engineering (Water Resources)

Summary of PhD Program:

The aim of this project is to develop a coupled multi-layer shallow water and floating debris modelling system to investigate the transport dynamics of debris and the impact on hydraulic structures in fluvial environments. The hydrodynamic models currently used in engineering practice lack the capability to accurately model: a) linear features such as bridges, gates and weirs which act as obstructions to flow; b) floating debris; and c) dam breach formation. These features can heavily influence flow characteristics, flood risk and operation of infrastructure dangerous loading of structures and increased scour.
