1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Personalized and Automated Transportation
Summary of PhD Program:
Emerging transport technologies such as automated vehicles (AVs) may hold out great benefits to the urban environment and various travelers, yet AV’s impact on specific groups with unique characteristics has hardly been explored in the literature, not to mention the lack of empirical evidence. The main objective of the proposed study is to fill this gap by exploring the mobility behavior, preferences, and needs of unique groups and to develop optimal automated mobility solutions for them using state-of-the-art simulation tools that closely mimic reality.
Application Deadline: 15.12.2024
2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Human-Computer Interaction / Human-AI Interaction
Summary of PhD Program:
We are searching for a full-time Doctoral Researcher working Engineering Psychology Group. The research will focus on user studies and intelligent systems. This position will be funded based on an initial 2-year contract + 2 years extension. The key idea is to apply theories, models, and methods from psychology to research in Human-AI interaction.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in topic Textiles for planetary emergency
Summary of PhD Program:
Research in design in the field of textiles and fashion means artistic design research with a strong focus on, both theoretically and practically, deepening understanding of the interplay between analysis and synthesis in the design process as a basis for developing design methodology, techniques, and programmes. The research approach is mainly experimental and focused on design in which the development of methodology, programs, and techniques presupposes critical experimental artistic work.
Application Deadline: 7.3.2024
4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Wood Extractives Group
Summary of PhD Program:
Control of wood extractives plays a vital role in closing the water loops in pulp mills, thus helping the pulp and paper industry to achieve the “zero effluent” target. As there is no efficient way to remove them from the fiberline, extractives cause technical challenge for effluent closure. Wood extractives can create serious process problems, as they flow and accumulate in water forming pitch deposits. The extractives retained in the pulps may adversely affect the physiochemical properties of the products (surface energy, paper strength, etc.).
Application Deadline: 2.3.2024
5. Fully Funded PhD Position in radio engineering for MRI applications
Summary of PhD Program:
The Department of Electrical Engineering and Automation from Aalto University is offering a Doctoral Researcher position in Radio Engineering. The goal of the research is to develop and optimize a new type of transceiver radiofrequency coil for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). In brief, the proposed coil design is based on a patented innovation which will bring significant advantages for medical imaging and diagnostics. This position is conditional to the project obtaining a Research-to-Business grant from Business Finland during the Spring application period.
Application Deadline: 29.2.2024
6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Photo-assisted Atomic Layer Deposition
Summary of PhD Program:
We invite you for a challenge in developing novel thin-film solutions by Photo-assisted Atomic Layer Deposition (Photo-ALD), to be applied in batteries, photoelectrochemical catalysis and microelectronics. Your work will contribute towards materials solutions that have impact on solving urgent technological questions. Your tasks will include developing processes and instrumentation to deposit various materials using Photo-ALD, an emerging thin-film deposition method. To build a solid understanding on the processes and materials, you will conduct characterizations using the modern instruments available at Aalto University campus. You will also collaborate with the other scientists in our group and with our international collaborator network, for example on studying the reaction mechanisms at atomic level.
Application Deadline: 26.2.2024
7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Energy systems modelling
Summary of PhD Program:
The successful applicant will be appointed as a PhD researcher, to work on developing and applying energy system and integrated assessment models. Particular areas of focus include better modelling of (1) heterogeneity, behaviour and vulnerability of energy system’s actors, (2) uncertainty and multidimensional energy system resilience, and (3) demand side management solutions. The work will be funded through projects, especially IAM COMPACT ( https://www.iam-compact.eu/ ) and FLAIRE ( https://flaire.fi/ ).

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Measurement Science and Technology
Summary of PhD Program:
We have recently started two new projects funded by the European Union, one on developing new LED-based standard light sources for the UV region (Newstand), and the other on characterizing personal dosimeters (MeLiDos). The research for the thesis starts in these projects. We appreciate good study records, fluent written and oral skills in Finnish and / or English languages, and practical skills, e.g. practical hobbies. Work requires some traveling e.g. to project meetings and conferences.
