1. PhD Programs in Cyber-Physical Systems
Summary of PhD Positions:
The EISLAB division of the Department of Computer Science, Electrical and Space Engineering conducts research within Cyber-Physical Systems, Internet of Things, Systems-of-Systems automation, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Data Science, Electronic systems design, and sensor systems. EISLAB is involved in several large European projects on distributed system construction with a focus on IoT, systems of systems (SoS), and CPS. Recent examples include Arrowhead Tools (more than 80 partners, EUR 91 million) and DigiPrime (more than 35 participants). Our research is conducted in close collaboration with industries such as Bosch, Ericsson, Volvo, Infineon, Boliden, LKAB, SKF, and leading international universities. A major result is the Eclipse Arrowhead, an open-source software framework for industrial automation widely supported by European industry.
Application Deadlines: November 20, 2022
2. PhD Programs in electronics systems with a focus on electric drive systems for aviation
Summary of PhD Positions:
The environmental effects of flying on climate change have become a major driving force for the development of electric aircraft, where the focus is currently on safety, battery technology and driveline development. Today’s certified electric airplanes carry a maximum of two passengers for 100 km, but development is progressing quickly.
The Swedish company Heart Aerospace is now developing an electric aircraft for 19 passengers to be put into service by 2026, and at Skellefteå airport pilot training is conducted with the electric aircraft Pipistrel Alpha Electro. Associated charging infrastructure is expanded with charging stations, solar parks and, energy storage. At Luleå University of Technology, our group is involved in driving the area forward via projects and collaborations with authorities and local actors.

3. PhD Programs in Digital Mining
Summary of PhD Positions:
In the underground mines wheel loaders, known as LHD machines, is mostly used to load and transport the ore. Today these machines have become more advanced with computerized measurement and control systems that can monitor and measure the machine performance and also properties of the ore contained in the bucket. Modern drilling equipment is often automated, supervised from remote locations. The data monitored on these machines are capable of providing detailed rock mass characteristics and other important production performance parameters to engineers and management. The visualization and presentation of data-based information to management and operators for decision making in a production environment, is also an important part of utilizing this large data set.
Application Deadlines: November 15, 2022
4. PhD Programs in Fluid Mechanics
Summary of PhD Positions:
You will work within a group that performs research on Hydraulic Engineering and Ecohydraulics where one of the main objectives is to reduce the local environmental effects from Hydropower. The aim of this specific project is to develop digital twins of river stretches regulated by hydropower that couples the flow fields from numerical hydraulic models of rivers with individual based population models of different fish species to determine the environmental impacts of current and future flow scenarios. The project is multidisciplinary and is carried out in collaboration with biologists from Karlstad University and Vattenfall Research and Development.

5. PhD Programs in Energy Engineering
Summary of PhD Positions:
The overall aim of your research is to propose efficient and sustainable thermochemical conversion (TCC) processes for fast-growing broadleaved species (FGBs). You will investigate how plant species, forest management, and feedstock handling influence biomass composition and thermophysical properties. Then, you will investigate such differences affect reactions behaviour of biomass and the properties of material and energy products. You will mainly handle combustion, gasification and pyrolysis technologies. Based on the results of your research, you will suggest suitable processes and process conditions for different assortments of FGBs.
Application Deadlines: 03 of November
6. PhD Programs in Underwater Robotics
