1. Fully Funded PhD Position in The perception and effect of glare in normal vision and in developmental visual diseases

Summary of PhD Program:

Glare is a perceptual phenomenon leading to discomfort and impaired vision and can severely affect activities of daily living. Glare impacts upon people with normal vision, especially in the context of reading, with a high proportion of individuals using backlight screens such as PC monitors, tablets or phones to read for many hours a day. Glare also disproportionately affects people with visual diseases. The focus of most glare research has been on age-related visual conditions, especially cataract. Far less understood are developmental visual diseases that lead to glare disorders from a young age.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in The development and evaluation of a social cooking intervention in places of worship

Summary of PhD Program:

People from South Asian ethnicity (SA) constitute 9.3% of the population in the most recent census data for the United Kingdom. In comparison to their white counterparts South Asians are at an increased risk of developing cardio-metabolic diseases (T2DM, IHD, heart failure). Large scale cohort studies have shown the conventional risk factors such as smoking prevalence, increased cholesterol level and systolic blood pressure are lower in SAs in comparison to their white counterparts. The increased incidence of these conditions may therefore result from other lifestyle factors and inherent genetic risks. Systematic review evidence consistently shows that seeking to achieve lifestyle changes through diet and exercise have limited success (Farhat et al., 2024; Rai et al., 2023).

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Advanced Microstructure Characterisation of Fusion Structural Materials subject to Simultaneous Creep and Irradiation

Summary of PhD Program:

The aim of this PhD work is to characterise both deformation and fracture mechanisms in relation to the microstructural evolution of CuCrZr alloy and RAFM steel subject to simultaneous creep and proton irradiation. You will perform 3D correlative microscopy studies by using the UK’s first-of-its-kind characterisation facility (the Hercules package) to create microstructure-related material database. The rich information across length-scales will be utilised for calibration of the CPFEM models that rely on the capture of the most important microstructure features.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Cultural adaptation of a digital health platform for patients with chronic kidney disease from a South Asian background

Summary of PhD Program:

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major public health emergency. 7 million people in the UK have CKD, numbers are expected to increase over the next 10 years, with a major impact on the UK health economy (1). The majority of patients with CKD are looked after in primary care, with no access to specialist secondary care renal services and public awareness of CKD and its health implications are low (2,3). Patients with CKD have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, reduced quality of life, functional impairment and high symptom burden (4).

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Mediators of loin pain in IgA nephropathy

Summary of PhD Program:

A study performed in Leicester, funded by Kidney Research UK, examined over 20,000 postings on social media and confirmed pain as a symptom widely experienced by those with IgAN (1). The incidence of IgAN peaks among young adults, and it is therefore likely this symptom confers significant psychosocial and socioeconomic impacts at both an individual and a societal level. A pilot survey we have since conducted found that over two thirds of patients with IgAN experience this pain, and available analgesics are of little benefit.
