2. 05 Fully Funded PhD Position in Educational Work and Subject-Matter Education with Specializations

Summary of PhD Program:

The Department of Pedagogical, Curricular and Professional Studies constitutes one of the strongest didactic environments in the Nordic countries. We work with research and education related to teaching and learning. A shared interest at the department is to develop knowledge that contributes to a more equal and sustainable society, through education and research on higher education, schools and classrooms. Work at the department includes teacher education, research and developmental work that is relevant to school practices. The practice-based element of this work is often conducted in collaboration with individual schools, municipalities and the Swedish National Agency for Education (Skolverket).

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Natural science, specializing in biology

Summary of PhD Program:

The project will assess the species diversity, systematics, taxonomy, and ecological traits of the truffle genus Hymenogaster with a focus on Swedish/Nordic species. The project aims will be reached through field work, microscopy, laboratory work and data analysis. The project will use ecological and morphological data as well as molecular methods. The main supervisor is Henrik Nilsson. Co-supervisors are Ellen Larsson and Mikael Jeppson. The Ph.D. student will have opportunities to collaborate with researchers at the Gothenburg Global Biodiversity Centre GGBC.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Mathematical modelling of cardiovascular disease

Summary of PhD Program:

The development of cardiovascular disease (CVD) is driven by lipid accumulation in the artery wall. Since blood lipids are insoluble in water, they are transported in water-miscible lipoproteins. Chylomicrons and very-low density lipoproteins (VLDL) carry most triglycerides and are referred to as triglyceride-rich lipoproteins (TRLs). Most cholesterol is transported in low-density lipoprotein (LDL) particles. Increased levels of LDL are causatively linked to development of CVD and lowering of LDL levels reduces cardiovascular events. However, cholesterol-lowering medication only prevents up to half of these events. Recent advances in human genetics indicate that the remaining ‘residual’ risk of CVD is caused by elevated levels of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins (TRLs) and their remnants.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Atmospheric Science

Summary of PhD Program:

The Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology conducts high-quality research and education in chemical sciences and molecular life sciences. Our research and education focuses on a deep understanding of chemical and biological processes in cells and in the environment. We address important societal issues such as antibiotic resistance, cancer, brain diseases, environmental problems and climate change. In this way, we contribute to achieving the UN’s global goals for sustainable development in the areas of good health and well-being, sustainable energy for all, sustainable cities and communities, and combating climate change.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Translational breast cancer research

Summary of PhD Program:

The main objectives of this project are to perform a molecular characterization of BCSCs in TNBC and discover new treatment options that target BCSCs. The project involves cell culture, animal experiments, and application of functional studies using various techniques within molecular and cell biology, including large-scale methods such as flow cytometry and single-cell RNA sequencing. This work may not only pinpoint promising treatment strategies that can be used for future testing in clinical trials, but also identify genes that play a pivotal role in the survival of BCSCs. These genes, in turn, may be used as diagnostic tools to identify patients that would most benefit from targeted treatments.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Molecular mechanisms of neurodevelopmental disease

Summary of PhD Program:

This project will use cellular models of a number of understudied or “new” congenital diseases to establish genotype-phenotype associations and study disease mechanisms. In part, skin cells from specific patients will be used. Alternatively, genetic variants mimicking those found in patients will be introduced into healthy cells, which will later be differentiated into neurons to elucidate disease mechanisms in relevant cell types. The results of this study will increase our understanding of the underlying biology and improve the diagnostics of certain rare diseases, which in the long run will pave way for future molecular therapies. For the PhD student, the project will offer a solid training in cell- and molecular biology, advanced cell culture techniques, genetics, experimental design and literature review.
