1. 02 Fully Funded PhD Position in Dwelling with Crisis: Home at Spaces of Chronic Violence

Summary of PhD Program:

Doctoral researchers will pursue a doctoral degree as part of the project Dwelling with Crisis: Home at Spaces of Chronic Violence, funded by a European Research Council (ERC Consolidator Grant). The project studies incapacitating material, affective, and political conditions of home-making and everyday dwelling in spaces of economic collapse, infrastructural shortage, protracted state/settler violence and/or war-torn environments. It focuses on three regions – West Bank, Gaza, and Lebanon – to explore (i) ways of making home in spaces constantly exposed to affective disruptions, political incapacitations, and material negations, and to so develop (ii) novel methodological and conceptual ways for thinking the negative politics of materiality, affect and dwelling/home. The five-year project (2023-2028) is led by Dr Mikko Joronen and is implemented by a research team of altogether 4 postdoctoral researchers, 2 PhD-students, a senior research fellow, the PI, and a coordinator-researcher.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in AI for bioacoustic analysis

Tampere University (Finland) offers a position for a doctoral researcher (an early-stage researcher (ESR). The job position requires conducting research on an individual project at a doctoral student level and studying toward completing a doctoral degree. We are looking for a candidate to pursue the research on project “Human-in-the-loop AI for bioacoustic event recognition”, which will develop active learning methods which will allow training machine learning models on large-scale bioacoustics datasets, while minimizing the amount of human annotated labels.

The primary objective of this position is to generate new cutting-edge scientific knowledge for both academia and the industry in the field of antenna arrays and front-ends used in RF transmitter and receiver systems for defense and security applications, including sensing and communications. The beginning phase of the work involves conducting a literature review and technology survey on electronically steerable antenna arrays for wideband operation as well as refining and expanding the provided initial research plan based on the findings, towards a technologically sound and scientifically innovative direction.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Nanophotonics

Summary of PhD Program:

As a Doctoral Researcher you will design new nanophotonic devices, develop clean-room nanofabrication processes and carry out device characterization. The results will be disseminated in scientific peer-reviewed journals, international conferences, doctoral network events and events with industry. The tasks of doctoral researchers also include teaching duties that amount to approximately 5% of their annual working hours, unless there are justified reasons to the contrary.
