Are you holding Master’s degree and looking for fully funded PhD positions? Newcastle University, Newcastle upon Tyne, England invites online application for multiple funded PhD Programs / fully funded PhD positions in various research areas.

Candidates interested in fully funded PhD positions can check the details and may apply as soon as possible. Interested and eligible applicants may submit their online application for PhD programs via the University’s Online Application Portal.

1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Neuromuscular disorders: Modelling of Disease Progression in Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) through Multi-Omic and Clinical Data Integration

Summary of PhD Program:

FSHD is a rare neuromuscular disorder. No approved treatment is currently available. Slow and variable disease progression complicate trial design and significantly impair treatment development. The ability to identify patients at risk of rapid progression and to predict the extent of muscle degeneration in a specific individual are critical unmet needs. While muscle imaging from well-characterised patients and transcriptomic technologies provide rich data, these remain under-utilised for predictive modelling.

Application Deadline: 10th August 2025

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Kidney Disease: Multi-omics of inherited cystic kidney diseases

Summary of PhD Program:

Interested in developing new experimental systems for previously unknown disease mechanisms? This MRC-funded PhD project will use an integrative multi-omics framework to explore the molecular landscape of cystic kidney disease to reveal unknown disease mechanisms and identify new therapeutic avenues. Inherited cystic kidney diseases, including Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD) and Autosomal Recessive Polycystic Kidney Disease (ARPKD), are major contributors to end-stage renal disease worldwide. While genetic mutations (e.g., in PKD1, PKD2, and PKHD1) are known to underlie these conditions, the complex molecular pathways that govern cyst initiation, growth, and progression remain poorly understood.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Diagnostics and Bioinformatics of Kidney Genetics

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD tackles a key diagnostic bottleneck in ADTKD-MUC1 and integrates precision genomic medicine into routine kidney care. You will build a clinical trial-ready cohort by developing an accurate, scalable sequencing and bioinformatics pipeline, alongside genetic risk stratification, positioning Newcastle as a world leader in ADTKD diagnostics and clinical trials.

Application Deadline: 10 August 2025

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in biostatistics, investigating operating characteristics for rare disease clinical trials

Summary of PhD Program:

With typically much smaller populations of eligible participants, clinical trials in rare diseases often cannot achieve the standard 80% or 90% power requirements, alongside a 5% type I error rate, in the final analysis. There is widespread acceptance that this does not mean such trials should not take place. This implies the usual operating characteristics are not appropriate. However, there is no agreement on which alternative characteristics are suitable.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Protecting Little Ones: Preventing and Reducing Intestinal Infectious Disease in Nurseries using Mixed Methods

Summary of PhD Program:

As our PhD student, you’ll be at the forefront of developing smarter solutions, working in partnership with UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). You’ll use anthropogenic approaches and cutting-edge biological modelling to understand exactly how IIDs spread in nurseries. The project aims to develop improved intervention guidelines to prevent high mortality IIDs, considering what’s realistic and affordable for parents and nurseries.

Application Deadline: 28th July 2025

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Design and evaluation of multi-functional Blue Green Infrastructure under climate change

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD, in collaboration with stakeholders will, develop a flexible interactive framework that builds upon this optimisation tool to a explore wider decision space around the design of BGI, including: incorporating relevant policy levers and management strategies, climate change projections/rainfall events, broader BGI design constraints and other multiple benefits of BGI, e.g. connectivity for ecological and biodiversity benefits or urban heat mitigation. Working across two demonstrator case studies in the UK and Ireland you will identify synergies and areas of best practice from a policy and regulation perspective. A policy internship at a relevant organisation is embedded into this programme.

Application Deadline: 27th July 2025

7. Fully Funded PhD Position

Summary of PhD Program:

The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the United Kingdom (CSC) is responsible for managing Britain’s contribution to the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP). Awards are funded by the Department for International Development (for developing Commonwealth countries), and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills and the Scottish Government (for developed Commonwealth countries), in conjunction with UK universities. The CSC also nominates UK citizens for scholarships to study in other Commonwealth countries under the CSFP.
