1. Fully Funded PhD Position in The user-centred design of next-generation body armour and apparel

Summary of PhD Program:

As part of this research, the appointee will actively engage with the funder. We will take an interdisciplinary approach to evaluating and designing future body armour, associated apparel, and apparatus. Various digital design manufacturing technologies, such as CAD, 3D scanning, and 3D printing, will likely be employed, alongside a user-centred design methodology. This approach will support the development of generation-after-next body armour and personal protection systems with enhanced fit, comfort, user wellbeing, and protection in mind.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Re-imagining Engineering Design

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD studentship falls within the EPSRC Programme Grant ‘RIED’ (Re-Imagining Engineering Design), a multi-institute project investigating new concepts for the future of high-value manufacturing. This project is seeking candidates with a profound interest in the design, manufacture and validation of high-performing lightweight, multifunctional products. The candidate will join a multidisciplinary team, including industrial collaborators, who are re-imagining engineering design and manufacturing.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Eating and movement behaviours, mental health and glucose monitoring

Summary of PhD Program:

Hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar) is key symptoms in some inherited metabolic conditions such as Glycogen Storage Disease types with liver involvement. Hypoglycaemia must be avoided to prevent acute complications, including seizures, coma, and death, and to reduce the severity and risk of long-term complications associated metabolic derangements. Individuals with persistent severe hypoglycaemia therefore require close monitoring of blood glucose levels and strict dietary intervention to maintain appropriate metabolic control.

Application Deadline: 16 November 2023

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Rotor Blade Vibration

Summary of PhD Program:

The aim of this project is to develop a test methodology to measure the turbine blades’ vibration response as a function of input energy. This will allow blades to be ranked in terms of the severity of their response to resonance excitation and identify blades where fatigue failure may initiate. The research will focus on modelling the rotor system to capture the blade vibration interactions on a benchtop setting and compare the results to data measured on working turbines. The parameterisation of the rotor system model will be based on data collected from a benchtop blade responsiveness rig that has been developed by our research team.
