KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden invites online application for multiple fully funded PhD Programs in various research areas. Candidates interested in fully funded PhD positions can check the details and may apply as soon as possible.

1. PhD Programs in Human-Computer Interaction

Summary of PhD Positions:

The development in recent years towards increasingly weather-based electricity production, together with an ever greater integration of the electricity system in Europe, has meant that the work in the control rooms will become increasingly labor intensive. In the future, operators will have to work more actively to ensure that the frequency and voltage of the electric power system are around nominal values, thereby guaranteeing that consumers have access to the sustainable electricity they need. This urgent and highly topical problem is relevant for those who want to investigate how the control room for electric power systems of the future should be organized and how the computer systems should be designed so that the operators get useful and adapted interactive information systems.

2. PhD Programs in Reconfigurable Neuromorphic Systems

Summary of PhD Positions:

We are seeking a Ph.D. student that will work on a Swedish Research Council (VR) funded project that aspires to create a new future-looking framework for synthesizing modern neuromorphic hardware on reconfigurable architectures. The Ph.D. student will work with all aspects of the framework, including its design, bench marking, and evaluation. The focus will be on mapping neuromorphic systems onto Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). The Ph.D. student will also use the framework as a method to explore emerging technology (e.g. 3D stackable memory) in order to quantify performance and power-consumption benefits of future neuromorphic systems in the decades to come.

4. PhD Programs in Physical chemistry and environmental chemistry

Summary of PhD Positions:

Over 2 billion lightning events occur in Earth’s atmosphere every year, which might even increase in the future with global warming. In spite of this, the effects of lightning on the chemistry of the atmosphere are not taken into account today and has been studied to a limited extent. This PhD work is taking place within a new research project, in collaboration between the Department of Chemistry of KTH and the Lightning Research group of Uppsala University, to investigate the effects of different types of lightning discharges on the chemistry of the atmosphere, in particular on the transformations of organic compounds.

5. PhD Programs in Power Electronics

Summary of PhD Positions:

The primary objective of the gate driver is to control the power semiconductor devices of the motor inverter such that they switch in an optimal way for maximum efficiency and in order to protect the inverter from internal short circuits and extreme fault cases. A smart gate driver can also perform additional tasks, for instance tailored switching transitions for reduced motor winding stress or condition monitoring of gate threshold voltage, gate leakage, or ON-state voltage drop. Different realizations (for instance with FPGA) should be compared regarding performance and reliability. Advanced signal processing may be necessary and the implementation of this may have to be investigated

6. PhD Programs in Power Electronics

Summary of PhD Positions:

The position will be located in the power electronics research group within the school of electrical engineering and computer science at KTH. The group carries out research in several fields, notably high-power electronics for power transmission grids, and applications of wide-bandgap power semiconductors. The world today faces a major challenge when it comes to reducing emissions related to the transport of people and goods. Heavy road vehicles contribute 5-7% of total human greenhouse gas emissions and are particularly difficult to electrify due to their long range, high power, and reliability requirements.
