1. Fully Funded PhD Position in extreme value theory for survival and cure analysis
Summary of PhD Program:
This project will develop statistical methods and theory for analyzing time-to-event data when a fraction of the population is immune to the event of interest (‘cured’). For example, in oncology the event of interest is cancer relapse/death, and the cured patients after treatment will never experience the event. However, in absence of a lifetime follow-up, cured patients cannot be distinguished from the uncured ones who do not show signs of the disease. A major constraint of most existing methods for cure models is the sufficient follow-up assumption, i.e. the study duration should be longer than the time span of possible events, which is rarely satisfied in practice.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Modelling to advance Climate Justice & Adaptation for coastal households
Summary of PhD Program:
The PhD project contributes to a broader project on pathways towards equitable coastal climate adaptation. As part of your PhD, you will work with, and further develop, the DYNamic climate impact Adaptation Model (DYNAMO). DYNAMO is an agent-based model, that captures adaptation action and interactions of households and governments, and how they are influenced by changing climate risks. You will (1) adapt DYNAMO so that it represents vulnerable and marginalized households, and (2) apply DYNAMO to specific case-studies to analyse interaction effects between government adaptation strategies and household or community responses.

Summary of PhD Program:
The main scientific constructs of the scientific discourse that inform policymaking in the Netherlands are the Nitrogen Critical Loads (NCL) and the model AERIUS that uses the OPS model as its calculation core. OPS produces GCN (Grootschalige Concentratiekaarten Nederland) and GDN (Grootschalige Depositiekaarten Nederland) maps. Moreover, AERIUS is used to determine individual contributions of nitrogen emitters as to determine whether such contributor does or does not exceed local NCL values for Nature2000 areas, with legal implications. Still, these two major constructs are informed by a ‘subset’ of data-gathering systems and models with their own statistical procedures.
