1. Fully Funded PhD Position in the field of biological toxins
Summary of PhD Program:
A person who has previous experience with chromatographic methods and mass spectrometry as well as experience with different sample preparation methods is best suited for the position. However, the key qualities are a passion for scientific research and the ability to work with a degree of independence. The applicant must have a master’s degree in biochemistry, analytical chemistry, or organic chemistry. Fluent English language skills are required from the applicant. Finnish language skills are considered an advantage.
Application Deadline: 14.11.2024
2. Fully Funded PhD Position
Summary of PhD Program:
The position is related to the project “Comprehensive measurement of aerosol light absorption with cantilever photoacoustic spectroscopy” of Academy Research Fellow Juho Karhu and is done in conjunction with the Laser Spectroscopy Group. The group has a long history of applying cantilever enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy for high performance gas sensing, and in the past few years has extended the technique to aerosol absorption measurements of black carbon. The new project aims to further expand on the photoacoustic black carbon measurements, revise the instrumentation to cover a wider range of target particles, and apply the method also for infrared absorption spectroscopy of aerosols.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Sustainable lake restoration
Summary of PhD Program:
The Doctoral researcher will be appointed for a fixed-term 3-year contract (Start date: January 1, 2025) to work in a multidisciplinary project entitled “Opportunities for the sustainable lake restoration by sediment removal and sediment reuse as phosphorus fertilizer”. The Doctoral project is a part of EU funded project Fostering European Lakes Restoration by Nutrient Removal, Recovery, and Reuse: Integrated Catchment and In-lake Scale Approach (FERRO). The position will be supervised by Dr Olga Tammeorg (Aquatic Sciences) and Dr Priit Tammeorg (Crop Science).
Application Deadline: 31.10.2024
4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Organic and Polymer Chemistry
Summary of PhD Program:
The competitive candidate should hold an MSc degree in organic chemistry or polymer chemistry. Expertise in synthesis and analysis (NMR and optical spectroscopy) of organic molecules and materials is a pre-requisite for the position. We are looking for a creative and independent thinker with strong analytical skills and a passion for academic science. Strong command in written and spoken English is required. In addition, we appreciate lab equipment skills. The doctoral researcher is expected to complete the doctoral studies within three years and publish at least 3 scientific articles as the first author.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Boreal Peatlands
Summary of PhD Program:
Boreal peatlands store vast amounts of carbon and are important carbon sinks that help mitigate global warming. Increasing drought in the boreal zone threatens these carbon sinks as limited water availability can drastically reduce plant production. The water use strategies of boreal peatland plants in response to drought and their impact on peatland production, however, are largely unknown. Therefore, we urgently need to understand the water use of peatland plants and its implications for peatland carbon sink potentials. To address this knowledge gap, our project will assess the drought response of distinct peatland types, i.e., pristine and forestry-drained peatlands.
Application Deadline: 21.10.2024
6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Extracellular Matrix (ECM) and Cancer Therapy Resistance
Summary of PhD Program:
Our laboratory is located in the Department of Biochemistry and Developmental Biology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Helsinki. Here, we are studying the mechanisms underlying metastatic cancer progression with the central goal of developing biomarkers for metastatic disease and novel treatments aimed at reverting invasive disease or containing metastatic lesions. Building on recent work (Conway JRW, PNAS, 2023; Conway JRW, et al, Science Advances, 2023), we are developing ECM spot arrays using native compositions from decellularised tissues, along with advancing three-dimensional (3D) in vitro models for co-culture of multiple cell types, representative of the complex tumour microenvironment.
