1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Human-centric generative design for absolute sustainability
Summary of PhD Program:
This PhD project aims to pioneer a transformative approach to sustainable design by integrating human-centric principles with nature-inspired AI-driven generative design methodologies to achieve absolute sustainability that respects planetary boundaries while fulfilling human needs. By bridging human-centric innovation, generative algorithms, and sustainability metrics, this project seeks to redefine how novel products and systems are conceived, developed, and evaluated.
Application Deadline: 7th September 2025
2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Quantifying natural flood management through peatland restoration in the upland moorland environment, Physical Geography
Summary of PhD Program:
This PhD will address research gaps in quantifying how much peatland restoration can benefit NFM efforts in moorland. Specifically, there is a need to understand how and why peak flow reductions persist following restoration and reduced surface water storage capacity during events, and the potential for peatland restoration to have significant impacts on peak flow reductions if a wider area of the moor is restored. This PhD will employ in-depth hydrological monitoring and fine-scale, fully distributed hydrological modelling, with the ultimate goal of optimising NFM strategies in moorland, to improve flood resilience for rural, upland communities.
Application Deadline: 22nd August 2025

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Metasurfaces for mm-wave communications
Summary of PhD Program:
In this research project you will design, build, and test a new set of ultra-thin, specially structured surfaces, exploring both the fundamental physics of electromagnetic materials and practical applications in 6G communications. The PhD is 4 years and funded by DSTL (Defence Science and Technology Laboratory), and you will undertake a mixture of experiment, theory, and numerical simulations in the department of physics at the University of Exeter.
Application Deadline: 15th August 2025
4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Examining the cognitive, emotional, and social consequences of encephalitis occurring in childhood and how these consequences compare to those associated with other acquired brain injuries
Summary of PhD Program:
The PhD will characterise the consequences of childhood encephalitis relative to acquired brain injuries & develop training to support understanding. Encephalitis is inflammation or swelling of the brain, caused by a virus, an infection, or an autoimmune response. Following encephalitis, children and young people can experience physical/neurological consequences (e.g., headaches, seizures, sleep difficulties), and neuropsychological sequalae such as cognitive difficulties (memory and new learning, executive function, attention, processing speed, cognitive fatigue etc.), and difficulties with regulating their emotions and behaviour.
Application Deadline: 9th September 2025

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Harnessing national helpline data to better understand, identify and prevent the abuse of older people
Summary of PhD Program:
This PhD aims to create a step-change in understanding the nature and scale of the abuse of older people. It will first develop the principles and methods for analysing sensitive data collected by a national charity’s 24/7 helpline for people experiencing/witnessing such abuse. Then the student will conduct analyses to answer important questions that are a priority for the Hourglass charity (e.g. the characteristics of the perpetrators of abuse, or the scale of Power of Attorney abuse).
Application Deadline: 1st September 2025
6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Effects of extreme weather events on indoor environment , household behaviour and housing management
Summary of PhD Program:
Climate change leads to more extreme weather in the UK and triggers public health responses. However, the impacts of extreme weather at the household level has been largely undocumented and may lead to exposure misclassification. This is particularly true for social housing residents, who are more likely to live in poor-quality housing and hence be more vulnerable to the health impacts of climate change.
