Are you holding Master’s degree and looking for fully funded PhD positions? Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Uppsala, Sweden invites online application for multiple funded PhD Programs / fully funded PhD positions in various research areas.
Candidates interested in fully funded PhD positions can check the details and may apply as soon as possible. Interested and eligible applicants may submit their online application for PhD programs via the University’s Online Application Portal.
1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Genomics and Bioinformatics
Summary of PhD Program:
We are looking for a highly motivated PhD-student to join our ongoing research on inherited retinal degenerative diseases (IRDs) in dogs. This is a heterogeneous group of diseases that for example includes various forms of progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) and a canine form of Stargardt disease. The focus of the project is to understand the biology and the genetics of IRDs. Corresponding diseases are also often affecting humans. The majority of the IRDs are incurable leading to severe visual impairment and blindness in both species. However, research on canine IRDs has made significant contributions to the development of advanced gene therapy treatments for humans.
Application Deadline: 2023-04-30
2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Remote Sensing of Forest Disturbances
Summary of PhD Program:
The project is “Developing remote sensing techniques for monitoring forest damage and disturbance in a changing climate”. Global warming has triggered forest abiotic and biotic disturbances to an unprecedented intensity in Europe in recent years. Windstorms, drought, insect outbreaks, and forest fires are exacerbated by extreme weather, weakening the forest ecosystem and devastating the sustainable management of forest resources. Such abiotic and biotic threats to the forest under global warming highlight the urgent need for monitoring forest health and disturbance.
This project aims at developing improved remote sensing techniques and methods for monitoring forest disturbance and damages at different scales, caused by, e.g., drought, insect outbreaks, wind storms, and forest fires. New methods and frameworks will be proposed adapting to the new generation of remote sensing data and new needs under climate issues.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Environmental Assessment
Summary of PhD Program:
We are seeking a PhD candidate who will work with the project ”Improved evidence-base for understanding and managing surface water brownification.” Major increases in the color and organic carbon content of many surface waters across Europe and North America have altered aquatic foodwebs, mobilized harmful substances and created problems for the treatment of drinking water. This has highlighted the need to better understand “brownification” and improve the evidence base for managing organic matter concentrations in streams, lakes and rivers.
The research project will use three decades of surface water data from across Sweden and other Nordic countries supported by data on climate and land use to resolve the role of different influences on brownification. Innovative statistical methods will be a central feature of this “top down” approach. Decades of soil and groundwater data will be the basis for a complementary, “bottom up” geochemical investigation of organic matter solubility in potential catchment source areas (mires, fens and mineral soils).
Both approaches will explore the hydrological connectivity of catchment organic matter sources using new, high resolution mapping products. Stakeholders will be involved in the execution of the study to create a regionally resolved national assessment of the brownification to date and expected developments with and without countermeasures.
Application Deadline: 2023-05-19
4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Radar Remote Sensing of Forest
Summary of PhD Program:
This project will contribute to the forest research by making use of proximate radar measurements from the ground and from a tower, and link those measurements with both terrestrial sensors and remote sensing collected from airplanes and satellites. Furthermore, field measurements will be used in combination with the radar meaasurements to generate wall-to-wall estimates.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in business studies with a focus on carbon planning
Summary of PhD Program:
The PhD student will be involved in a research project on economic management of farms towards greenhouse gas (GHG) emission goals. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to collaborate with colleagues in agricultural economics, psychology, management accounting, life cycle assessment and farm advisory services. The position will also be able to benefit from synergies with other Swedish- and EU-level projects in the group, including on GHG emission science-based targets and green nudging of farmers.
Application Deadline: May 12, 2023
6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Porcine Medicine
Summary of PhD Program:
Lawsonia intracellularis causes the disease proliferative enteropathy and poor growth rates in more than 40% of the Swedish piglet-producing herds. The bacterium is spread by faeces, causing disease in pigs post weaning. Most pigs in affected herds will retract the infection and the economic consequences for the farm is substantial. In the individual, the bacterium can be detected by PCR. For surveillance purposes at the herd level, serology to demonstrate humoral antibodies is used but to enable the development of effective, prophylactic measures it would be of value to also understand the importance of the sow milk in the protection of the piglet.
