1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Neuropsychological Applications of Implicit Learning

Summary of PhD Program:

You will develop tasks that differ in the extent to which the participant is guided to learn associations between ecologically relevant stimuli, such as faces and names, in an implicit and/or explicit way. You will recruit patients with Korsakoff’s syndrome or mild cognitive impairment, and cognitively unimpaired controls, and assess their learning and memory performance on these tasks using behavioural and electrophysiological (EEG) measures. The project will further our knowledge on interactions between implicit and explicit learning and will ultimately inform the design of future interventions to help amnesic patients facing daily memory challenges.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Age Effects on Memory Strategy Use at the Donders Centre for Cognition

Summary of PhD Program:

In this project, you will delve into the neurocognitive mechanisms that may influence memory strategy use in aging. Specifically, you will test the hypothesis that with aging, multiple mechanisms that are involved in optimal memory strategy use (i.e. strategy initiation, effectiveness, and utilisation), are affected. For this, you will examine how these mechanisms may change over the adult lifespan, acknowledging the fact that aging should be considered as a gradual, continuous process.

Moreover, you will identify neuroanatomical and cognitive correlates of aging-related changes in memory strategy initiation and effectiveness, using an existing database (n≈175) that includes data on memory strategy use and multiple neuropsychological tests, and neuroimaging data collected with MRI (e.g. T1, DWI, rsfMRI). Finally, you will use an ecologically valid approach to test memory strategy use in a daily life situation, for example by studying which strategies are used by older adults in order to memorise as much as possible from a conversation.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Cross-modal Art Perception at the Donders Centre for Cognition

Summary of PhD Program:

We are looking for a motivated PhD candidate with an interest in multisensory perception, art and artificial intelligence. When looking at a painting we often have an immediate impression, which determines whether we like it or not. This aesthetic appreciation likely involves the visual characteristics of the painting as well as the personal characteristics of the observer. Past research on aesthetic appreciation has largely taken a unimodal approach (e.g. concerning only visual aspects). However, modern society has an abundance of multisensory input in art, as well as in games, movies, and virtual-reality applications. Our aesthetic appreciation of these applications is therefore likely to depend on different types of, not yet fully understood, cross-modal influences.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Neural and Computational Control Mechanisms of Social-Emotional Regulation

Summary of PhD Program:

This project focuses on how individuals rapidly consider action goals alternative to their automatic action tendencies, and select an option based on potential consequences of those alternative action goals. The project considers two ways people can overcome automatic social-emotional action tendencies: internal goal-switching, internally generating alternative goals for those actions; or learning external outcomes, based on learned consequences of an action. We aim to assess how the combination of these two neuro-computational mechanisms explains human social-emotional regulation and its variation across individuals in relation to social anxiety.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Functional Metabolomics on Mycobacterium Tuberculosis

Summary of PhD Program:

Tuberculosis (TB) has plagued humans for thousands of years and remains one of the leading causes of death worldwide today. Tuberculosis is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), a bacterial pathogen that infects about a quarter of the world’s population. Although the frontline drugs are effective, drug resistance is emerging as a major threat to global TB control. TB drugs with new mechanisms of action are thus urgently needed. One rich and untapped source of new drug targets is the sizeable part of the Mtb genome that is uncharacterised.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Audiovisual Speech Perception at the Donders Centre for Cognition

Summary of PhD Program:

You will use virtual avatars, allowing careful control of their gestural movements, to establish which kinematic and communicative properties of hand gestures trigger the manual McGurk effect. You will assess how challenging listening conditions impact the perceptual weighting of visual, auditory and audiovisual cues to prominence, as well as determine the time-course of these cues using eye-tracking. Finally, you will design training studies to test how humans adjust their perception to between-talker variation in gesture-speech alignment.
