1. Fully Funded PhD Position in The effects of novel dietary supplement combinations on health and wellbeing in middle aged women

Summary of PhD Program:

Various dietary supplements have been shown to possess bioactive effects that could enhance health and wellbeing. However, few studies have examined longer-term intake of different supplements combinations on relevant markers. Our project aims to examine effects of dietary supplements with anti-inflammatory and other bioactive effects on muscle and joint pain, alongside other aspects of health and wellbeing in middle aged women.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Spray Testing for Improvements in Primary Break Up Modelling

Summary of PhD Program:

Modern numerical simulation of spray break-up for gas turbine atomisation applications relies heavily upon the use of primary atomisation models, which predict drop size and position based upon local gas/liquid phase conditions. Whilst direct simulations of breakup are possible, computational cost is high, restricting applications to small sections of geometry and for modest run times.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Quantum Local Area Network

Summary of PhD Program:

NPL, the UK’s national metrology institute, is developing a fully functioning, thoroughly characterised, quantum network (QLAN) linking heterogeneous nodes across its site. It will make this testbed available to users for testing hardware and applications. NPL will lead on the testing and security evaluation of the testbed and collaborate widely on the technology development.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Microstructural Analysis and Evolution of Waste-to-Energy Grate Bars

Summary of PhD Program:

Within energy from waste (EfW) plant, non-recyclable waste is combusted to extract useable heat to create electricity. This process has two major benefits: 1, electricity is generated from a source of fuel which would otherwise be considered as waste and 2, the waste is diverted away from land fill. This process generates high temperatures within environments which contain gases derived from the burning fuel which has variable compositions. This combustion is contained within the furnace of EfW plant which consists of a series of moving grates made up of many grate bars across the furnace floor.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Exploring Alkali Promoters in Catalysts for a Sustainable Economy through Advanced X-ray Spectroscopy

Summary of PhD Program:

Using capturing carbon dioxide and clean hydrogen is essential for a sustainable future in energy and chemical production. However, the transition is hindered by a lack of efficient, affordable catalysts. This EPSRC-funded project leverages cutting-edge X-ray spectroscopy to unlock how alkali elements can be harnessed to create powerful heterogeneous catalysts for CO₂ and hydrogen technologies. By gaining deep insights, we aim to design catalysts that fully exploit alkali species, driving real progress toward a more sustainable world.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Accelerated Systems Assurance with Model-Based Systems Engineering

Summary of PhD Program:

The project is suitable for students who have a STEM background. The programme includes formal teaching in model-based systems engineering from Loughborough Systems Engineering experts and industrial leaders. Throughout the duration of the programme, the student will be mostly based at Frazer-Nash’s Bristol office. This will provide the student with a suitable working environment, access to necessary infrastructure, and opportunities for interaction with stakeholders.
