Future climate change scenarios have increasingly highlighted the negative effects on agricultural productivity worldwide (e.g. Nelson et al., 2014) and this is likely to be especially acute in low income countries, particularly in the Global South (e.g. Morton et al., 2007). The significant role of agriculture in climate change has increased the importance of Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) practices. CSA is broadly defined as farmer practices that contribute to sustainable increases in agricultural productivity, build climate adaptation and resilience for farmers, and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (Khoza et al., 2020).

Summary of PhD Program:

The provision of ecosystem services is strictly connected to biodiversity. Therefore, to support community and environmental resilience, it is crucial to study biodiversity. The overarching aim of the PhD proposal is to generate empirical and actionable knowledge on how different forms of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) can contribute to landscape and biodiversity conservation while also strengthening the wellbeing of Indigenous Peoples and local communities in the region of Alta Verapaz (Guatemala). The project will apply a mixed-methods approach rooted in interdisciplinary environmental research to blend local knowledge with scientific information.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Advancing High Moisture Extrusion of Plant Protein blend for Next Generation Meat Analogue

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD project aims to explore process-quality inter-relationship of textured plant protein blend using under-utilized legume and algae by optimising the HME process. Working at the cutting-edge facilities of the Medway Food Innovation Centre (MFIC; https://mfic.gre.ac.uk) and supported by the $30m Bezos Centre for Sustainable Protein (led by Imperial College), the candidate will get direct hands-on exposure to run Thermo Fisher twin-screw extruder and training to use other industrygrade analytical equipment. This project would offer the selected candidate developing industry relevant skills to optimise HME process and learn various analytical methods to characterise quality attributes of food products.

Researchers, practitioners, and policy makers have shown that physical, mental, and social health research disparities exist between lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual (LGBTQIA+) populations and others. Such exclusion from the research process has contributed to a health knowledge deficit for LGBTQIA+ populations and resulted in limited evidence-based interventions that address the many health inequalities that disproportionately affect these populations across the lifespan.
