1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Control and monitoring of laser DED technology
Summary of PhD Program:
Advanced manufacturing technologies such as additive manufacturing (AM) and surface engineering is used across industry for making end use parts. Laser technology such as laser beam directed energy deposition is a technology that can be applicable to coatings, repair and AM. However, uncertainty still exists around part to part consistency and repeatability, which is limiting greater adoption. A fundamental solution to help address this problem is the need for simple, yet agile, monitoring and control systems augmented by artificial intelligence.
Application Deadline: 30/11/2023
2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Heat transfer in liquid spraying systems
Summary of PhD Program:
The project is in an exciting field at the forefront of research in spray cooling techniques for high heat flux applications. It involves advanced fundamental experimental heat transfer research. The successful candidate will be based at Brunel University London, but will be part of a team working with academics and researchers at Imperial College London, the University of Edinburgh and industrial partners.
The research carried out by the successful applicant will start with the setting up of an experimental facility, followed by a systematic study of single and two-phase spray cooling. The project will include an assessment of the effect of fluid properties, spray nozzle diameter, height-surface area ratio, volume flow rate and surface characteristics on possible heat transfer rates from the area to be cooled.
The heat flux to be dissipated and the degree of superheat (difference between the surface and the spray fluid temperature) will be gradually increased to study transition from single-phase to two-phase heat transfer in the area covered by the spray. Flow visualization experiments will also be carried out with high-speed, high resolution cameras. Our results will be compared with the experimental and modelling results obtained by Imperial and Edinburgh.
Application Deadline: 16/10/2023

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Extending useful metallic product lifetime through manufacturing
Summary of PhD Program:
Metals are vital to human society and have widespread uses across a broad spectrum of industries including but not limited to packaging, transport and construction applications. They are mainly used in load-bearing structural components. Such metallic components have limited useful lifetime due to dynamic environmental and mechanical stimuli, leading to the generation of defects, damages and eventual degradation of the mechanical properties and the failure of component. End-of-life components are then treated as waste which can either be disposed to landfill sites, incinerated or recycled.
Waste from end-of-life components undermines the available material resources and poses threats to our environment with dire global warming consequence. Hence there is an urgent need to maintain and extend the useful lifetime of components, thereby increasing material usage efficiency, reducing waste and minimizing environmental damage.
Application Deadline: 25/09/2023
4. Fully Funded PhD Position in liquid chromatography retention time
Summary of PhD Program:
This project will offer a challenging, collaborative and transdisciplinary opportunity for an excellent PhD candidate to work at the forefront of this exciting area with leading academic teams at Brunel University London and Imperial College London and in partnership with GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), a globally leading pharmaceutical company. All three teams have extensive track records in this area and will provide complementary and collaborative training in analysis using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry and advanced chemometrics. As part of the project, students will be expected to spend at least three months at a GSK site in the UK providing a unique industry experience and training opportunity.
Application Deadline: 11/09/2023
5. Fully Funded PhD Position in recycling of lithium ion batteries
Summary of PhD Program:
The research project aims to develop hydrometallurgical/electrochemical routes for recovering valuable materials from spent LIBs using environmentally benign solutions. It requires a researcher with strong chemistry fundamentals, and skills and experiences in wet chemistry or extractive metallurgy experiments. Candidate’s exposure and training in advanced chemical analytical tools such as XRD, SEM-EDS and ICP-MS are not essential but would be considered a bonus.
