1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Autonomous Robotics: Multi-collaborative scouting and mapping

Summary of PhD Program:

Robotics and Autonomous Systems (RAS) is an essential enabling technology for the Net Zero transition in the UK’s energy sector. However, significant technological and cultural barriers are limiting its effectiveness. Overcoming these barriers is a key target of this CDT. The focus of the CDT’s research projects will be how RAS can be used for the inspection, maintenance, and repair of new infrastructure in renewables (wind, solar, geothermal, tidal, hydrogen) and nuclear (fission and fusion), and to support the decarbonization of existing maintenance and decommissioning of assets.

Application Deadline: 11 July 2025

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Engineering IDLA: Reactive Burn Modelling

Summary of PhD Program:

The successful candidate will study the behaviour of energetic materials both at the microscopic (i.e. crystal deformation and failure) and macroscopic levels. Numerical techniques for the generation of digital twins and modelling the thermomechanical response of energetic materials will be developed, building on the extensive capabilities within the Impact and Shock Mechanics Laboratory. There will be the possibility to explore novel modelling approaches (e.g. SPG) as well as the use of machine learning, advanced computing, statistical modelling to explore the stochastic response to complex scenarios.

Application Deadline: 6th of June 2025

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Engineering IDLA: Isogeometric modelling of high-rate conditions for aerospace

Summary of PhD Program:

In this DPhil project, you will develop and implement novel, NURBS based, element formulations and validate the application of IGA to mechanical problems with complex features and close to material failure at high rate (e.g. extreme deformation, contacts, failure). Furthermore, you will have the opportunity to assess the scalability of IGA in Massively Parallel Processing simulations, exploring novel aspects of numerical modelling and expanding the computational mechanics capabilities of the group.
