1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Data-driven image mechanics (D2IM)

Summary of PhD Program:

The recent advent of deep learning (DL) has enabled data-driven models, paving the way for the full exploitation of rich image datasets from which physics can be learnt. Here at the University of Greenwich we recently developed a novel data-driven image mechanics (D2 IM) approach that learns from digital volume correlation (DVC) displacement fields of bone, predicting displacement and strain fields for undeformed X-ray computed tomography (XCT) images [1].

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in support of water and human health

Summary of PhD Program:

There is currently only sparse evidence of the pathways linking water justice and Indigenous water governance with mental health outcomes. The psychosocial and environmental impacts of ongoing colonial legacies are complex, collective, cumulative, and intergenerational. As a result, the practical demonstration of the role of art to build mental health resilience and act as a marker of water governance structures and territorial heritage has global importance. This doctoral project comprises an in-depth analysis of the linkages between Indigenous Peoples’ mental health resilience and water justice and the roles of art, youth and colonialism in determining these linkages.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Economic and Empowerment Impacts of Millet Processing

Summary of PhD Program:

Millets are an important crop in arid and semi-arid areas in India and Africa, typically tolerant to extreme weather and could be grown with low inputs in low rainfall areas. Millets have been a staple crop for millions of farm households in India and are a highly nutritious source of food for the poor rural communities in the country. However, due to inadequate postharvest technologies for processing and value-addition and skill among the farming communities about processing technologies, millets are looked down upon as inferior or as a poor man’s food. Hence capacity building and skill up-gradation among farming communities, especially among farm women on postharvest millet processing technologies and value addition, play an important role in economic and empowerment impacts.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Identifying agro-food industry by-products and agroecological applications

Summary of PhD Program:

The project focuses on the control of the parasitic weed Striga (S. hermonthica and S. asiatica) in sorghum, millet and rice crops in Senegal, Tanzania and Ethiopia. Both Striga hermonthica and S. asiatica are widely distributed parasitic weeds that infest 12-38% of the area under cereal production in Africa. Striga causes substantial yield losses in smallholder farming systems, leading to field abandonment and food insecurity. For the three crops combined (sorghum, millet, rice), the estimated annual production losses amount to 6,213,000 tons of grain, worth USD 2.32 billion annually.
