1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Nanoscopic retinal functional imaging of neural activity for early disease detection
Summary of PhD Program:
The research will explore the capability to detect biological nanoscale changes due to retinal neural function, advancing our understanding and diagnostic capabilities in the realm of retinal disease. Optical Coherent Tomography (OCT) serves as a foundational technology for this project. The primary objective is to develop advanced computational methods and stimulus designs to enhance the detection and analysis of retinal neural activity.
Application Deadline: 30 September 2026
2. Fully Funded PhD Position in How do ancient genes regulate animal embryo development at single cell resolution
Summary of PhD Program:
Many diseases of humans and other organisms are the result of a failure of multicellular organisation during embryo development (body plans) or other growth dysfunctions. To better understand why malfunction occurs, this interdisciplinary project which combines computational biology with evolutionary medicine will focus on a fundamental understanding of how evolutionarily old vs young genes interact to govern the formation of a healthy animal embryo (Drost, 2024).
Application Deadline: 21 March 2025

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Advanced sensing platforms
Summary of PhD Program:
This project focuses on the fabrication of nanomaterial-based substrates using laser-assisted photocatalytic growth of silver and gold nanoparticles. These substrates will be analysed using Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS)—a highly sensitive optical detection technique capable of identifying molecular structures with extreme precision.
Application Deadline: 30 September 2025
4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Bridging Genetics and Breeding: Advancing Marker-Assisted Selection in Potato
Summary of PhD Program:
The project will focus on developing a high throughput, amplification-based genotyping-by-sequencing platform to support marker-assisted selection at scale. By targeting key genetic haplotypes associated with disease resistance, tuber quality, and agronomic performance, the platform will provide breeders with an efficient tool for making informed selection decisions at the seedling stage.
