Are you holding Master’s degree and looking for fully funded PhD positions? Umeå University, Umeå, Sweden invites online application for multiple funded PhD Programs / fully funded PhD positions in various research areas.
Candidates interested in fully funded PhD positions can check the details and may apply as soon as possible. Interested and eligible applicants may submit their online application for PhD programs via the University’s Online Application Portal.
1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Sociology
Summary of PhD Program:
This PhD project will be carried out as part of the WASP-HS Research Cluster AI, Power and Politics. The candidate will analyse how AI-driven technologies reshape opinion dynamics and the public’s trust in media ecosystems. Central to this PhD project is a critical inquiry into how algorithmic systems influence the circulation of information and disinformation across digital platforms, and how such processes affect perceptions of credibility, truth, and democratic legitimacy.
Application Deadline: 2025-10-15
2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Development of Organic Light-Emission Devices in the EU Training Network FADOS
Summary of PhD Program:
You will be performing your PhD research at LunaLEC and at The Organic Electronics and Photonics Group (OPEG) at Umeå University, Sweden (see: opeg-umu.com). The research will be focused on the development of a novel light-emission technology termed the light-emitting electrochemical cell (LEC). The LEC is currently attracting increasing interest from both academia and industry since it can: (i) deliver bright and easily patterned light emission at low voltage; (ii) be thin, lightweight and flexible; (iii) be fabricated in its entirety by cost- and energy-efficient ambient-air printing; (iv) be highly sustainable (free from toxic and rare compounds and potentially recyclable).
Application Deadline: 2025-09-30

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Computing Science with focus on Visual Language Grounding
Summary of PhD Program:
The PhD student will focus on addressing the challenge of visual blindness in large language models (LLMs)—that is, the inability of a model to effectively process or understand visual information. This work involves integrating visual encoders with language models to create multimodal systems. The emphasis is on agentic approaches, where an LLM interacts with visual tools, which may themselves be neural networks. Central challenges include enabling LLMs to reason about visual structures, designing appropriate benchmarks for the target domain, and determining which fusion architectures best balance performance, interpretability, and computational efficiency.
Application Deadline: 2025-09-18
4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Computing Science with focus on Computer Security
Summary of PhD Program:
Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP) is Sweden’s largest individual research program ever, a major national initiative for strategically motivated basic research, education and faculty recruitment. The program addresses research on artificial intelligence and autonomous systems acting in collaboration with humans, adapting to their environment through sensors, information and knowledge, and forming intelligent systems-of-systems. The vision of WASP is excellent research and competence in artificial intelligence, autonomous systems and software for the benefit of Swedish society and industry.
