1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Automatic Control with Focus on Control and Optimization of Fossil Free Steel Production
Summary of PhD Program:
The main research area will concern control and optimization, applied to fossil free steel production. The aim of the project is to explore the use of control methods and optimization techniques in a novel steel production process, where hydrogen replaces the fossil fuel in the conventional process. The project is funded by LKAB´s foundation for sustainable transition of the mining and mineral sector.
Application Deadline: Oct. 6, 2024
2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Machine Elements – circular economy for electric motors
Summary of PhD Program:
The project is about the circular economy of industrial electric motors. As much as 45% of the world’s energy use comes from the industry’s 300 million electric motors. Continued electrification means that the number will double by 2040. 80% of today’s electric motors have a low energy class, and a shift to a higher class would reduce energy use by 10%. With legislation and increasing energy costs, engines will therefore be replaced, in parallel with electrification, which means that new production can more than double. Recycling the electric motor’s material for new manufacturing is complicated and expensive.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Ore Geology
Summary of PhD Program:
A number of different zinc and copper-dominated orebodies at the Zinc Mine will be characterized with respect to textures, mineralogy, metal content, mineral associations and metal distribution. The focus will be on integrating detailed characterization in the drill core with microanalytical techniques (e.g. SEM-WDS, electron microprobe, Laser Ablation ICPMS and QEMSCAN). The PhD student will characterize products from beneficiation tests conducted on the investigated ore types in order to better understand how variations in ore characteristics affect metal deportment, in particular the distribution of trace elements including critical metals.
Application Deadline: 21 October 2024
4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Machine Learning focus Sustainable Machine Learning
Summary of PhD Program:
The research projects on sustainable machine learning focus on using Edge AI and Tiny Machine Learning (TinyML) (https://youtu.be/MgqcLCqqjuQ) to create efficient, low-power models that can operate on edge devices with limited computational resources. By leveraging Edge AI, these projects aim to process data locally, reducing the need for data transmission to centralized servers, which in turn lowers energy consumption and latency. TinyML further enhances sustainability by enabling the deployment of machine learning models on microcontrollers and other highly resource-constrained devices.
