1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Nutrition-specific biomarkers in football
Summary of PhD Program:
Biomarkers, defined as indicators of normal biological processes, pathogenic processes, or responses to an exposure (Haller et al., 2023a), can provide an objective and individualised measure of training load, recovery, and health status to reduce injury and illness risk and maximise performance in male and female soccer players (Haller et al., 2023b). However, establishing athlete-specific reference ranges for most biomarkers is challenging due to significant interindividual variability in biomarker values and contextual differences in measurement (Lee et al., 2017).
Application Deadline: 21 July 2025
2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Evaluation of various evidence-based approaches to reducing head acceleration events and concussions in women’s rugby league, whilst optimising player performance
Summary of PhD Program:
Women’s rugby league has recently generated increased popularity and professionalism. Despite this, women’s rugby league players enter the Women’s Super League through a less formal player development system, in comparison to men. As such, there is significant opportunity to enhance support for developing players’ physical qualities and tackle technique, both of which play a role in performance optimisation and injury prevention.
Application Deadline: 21 July 2025

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Exploring the link between physical profiling characteristics and injury incidence across a competitive season
Summary of PhD Program:
Injuries in professional football not only disrupt player availability and team performance but also carry significant career-related consequences (Martins et al., 2022). Despite extensive use of physical profiling in elite football environments, the direct relationship between these metrics and actual injury risk remains unclear.
Application Deadline: 21 July 2025
4. Fully Funded PhD Position in The Rugby Union Integrated Study into Game and Training demands
Summary of PhD Program:
Rugby union is one of the most popular sports globally, with thriving competitions at domestic and international levels, played by both men and women. In England, all Gallagher Premiership, Premier Women’s Rugby and England international teams are provided with standardised player tracking devices via Catapult Sports which are worn during both training and matches, and match-events are coded by Oval Analytics. This provides a large and comprehensive game-wide dataset, which alongside other data sources (e.g., instrumented mouthguards) can be used to advance the current knowledge in rugby union.
Application Deadline: 13 July 2025
