1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Assessing the impact of steroids in children and young people with rheumatic conditions
Summary of PhD Program:
Glucocorticoids (GC), also known as Steroids, can be organ and life-saving in the treatment of inflammatory conditions. They can however impact health-related quality of life. In children, GCs can impact mental health, and participation in school, hobbies, and family life.
The Steroid PRO is a patient reported outcome (PRO) measure, developed by researchers at UWE Bristol and the University of Oxford to measure the impact of steroids on adult patients’ health related quality of life. The Steroid PRO has been validated for use as an outcome measure in clinical trials and in clinical practice to aid shared decision making by highlighting the patient perspective on the impact of Steroids.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in The role of gut microbiota in regulating tumour cell metabolism and malignant progression
Summary of PhD Program:
Colorectal cancer causes over 900,000 deaths per year worldwide. By 2040 incidence is predicted to rise by a further 50% and the disease is becoming progressively more prevalent in younger people. These tumours can take decades to develop from polyps (which are benign tumours present in 40% of people over 50) into cancer, rendering this a long-term illness that often goes undetected until too late.
The reason that some tumours progress whilst others do not is unclear, but is thought to be determined by their microenvironment, including dietary factors and the gut microbiota. Our recently published work shows that gut microbes interact differently with benign and malignant tumour cells yet can elicit tumour-promoting effects in both. This unique in vitro model of tumour progression allows us to study factors that can influence progression towards malignant, and therefore life-affecting, disease.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Shaping healthy urban environments: from the microbiome to the metropolis
Summary of PhD Program:
Urban environments constitute complex ecosystems, from microscopic organisms to complex social networks, with the capacity to powerfully influence the trajectory of human health. In the face of an exponential rise in non-communicable diseases (NCDs), now accounting for 80% of years lived with disability globally (WHO, 2020), rapid urbanisation poses both challenge and opportunity in the context of human and environmental health.
This PhD will take a highly interdisciplinary, systems approach to the prevailing increase in non-communicable diseases (NCDs), working across the fields of psychology, architecture, anthropology, biology, ecology, and computational neuroscience. As part of this doctorate, novel environmental metrics will be generated from existing, large-scale datasets to advance an index of urban health; computational models will be developed to help predict the trajectories of health given particular conditions; in addition, primary research will be undertaken using anthropological methods of inquiry to better understand the lived experiences of illness in urban environments.
