Candidates interested in fully funded PhD positions can check the details and may apply as soon as possible. Interested and eligible applicants may submit their online application for PhD programs via the University’s Online Application Portal.

1. Fully Funded PhD Position in RNA-based mechanisms

Summary of PhD Program:

The RNAcious laboratory, led by Dr Peter Sarin, is at the forefront of exploring RNA-based mechanisms that modulate protein synthesis in response to abiotic and biotic stresses. We utilize state-of-the-art LC-MS and RNA-seq techniques to address significant questions in tRNA biology, for example how post-transcriptional tRNA modification dynamics influences host and pathogen translation during infection, how adaptation of tRNA modification affects neoplastic proliferation, and how tRNA modifications may be utilized to tune translation.

We are looking for a skilled doctoral researcher (PhD student) that will work in a vibrant and international research environment as part of a Research Council of Finland funded project on RNA-mediated pathogenicity mechanisms in prokaryotic models. The successful applicant will work on one of two focus areas: (i) characterizing the role and dynamics of viral RNA-based components during virus infection, or (ii) exploring virus infection-mediated changes in archaeal translation. The project entails collaborative aspects with other teams and universities and will be tailored together with the successful applicant based on their interest and prior experience.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Law – just transition in the Arctic

Summary of PhD Program:

The Faculty of Law invites applications for a fixed term employment as a doctoral researcher initially from 1.1.2025 to 30.9.2026, with an option to continue the contract by two and a half (2,5) years in line with the continuation of the project to the second phase. The position is associated with the consortium project REBOUND: Reconceptualizing Boundaries Together Towards Resilient and Just Arctic Future(s). At the University of Helsinki, the project is led by Dorothée Cambou and funded by the Strategic Research Council of Finland.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Catchment research

Summary of PhD Program:

The group focuses on studying planktonic communities and their responses to natural and anthropogenic factors both in the Lammi area but also worldwide. Planktonic communities are fundamental to the food chain, encompassing multiple taxa crucial for water quality management and ecosystem services. Their short lifespan and high demographic rates make them powerful ecological indicators.

The current project aims to understand the primary sources of diffuse pollution in the intensively monitored pilot catchment and the impact of diffuse pollution to plankton biodiversity. Collaborating with members of the “Watershed Safety Plan”-Project (WSSP), the successful applicant will contribute to developing catchment-level water protection solutions at the Baltic level.

The project employs both observational and experimental data collection methods. Observational data, gathered through source-track campaigns across the entire catchment, will inform a hydrological model for the pilot catchment. Given the area’s predominant agricultural activities, the candidate will design experiments to assess the effects of various agricultural practices on aquatic biodiversity, particularly within the planktonic food web. The project uniquely integrates hydrological catchment models with experimental approaches to anticipate the large-scale impacts of anthropogenic activities on biodiversity. All necessary infrastructure and materials for experimentation are provided.
