1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Improving the efficiency of Hydrogen generation in electrolysis
Summary of PhD Program:
A fully funded PhD studentship is available under the supervision of Prof Colm Durkan, with a start date of 1 January 2025. Funding will cover the student’s stipend and tuition fees at the UK rate. As we strive to transition away from our reliance on fossil fuels, a number of alternative systems have risen in prominence, including electrification and the use of Hydrogen as a fuel. Hydrogen is traditionally created via hydrolysis of water, and the efficiency of this process is greatly increased by adding electrolytes to the water to increase its electrical conductivity.
Alkaline electrolysers are considered to be the most mature type of hydrogen producers; however, there is still much room for improvement in efficiency, particularly due to issues around bubble formation. Bubbles create issues by lingering on the electrodes and blocking reactant access, or though inducing concentration overpotential from micro-convection during bubble growth and departure. In this project, we will investigate the processes behind nucleation, growth and eventual separation of these bubbles.
Application Deadline: 2 October 2024
2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Nanoscale Diamond Quantum Sensors for In-Situ Detection of Reactive Radicals in Fuel Cell Membranes
Summary of PhD Program:
A fully funded PhD under the EPSRC CASE conversion studentship is available at home student fee rates in the Department of Physics, Cavendish Laboratory, with a starting date of 5 January or 17 April 2025. Hydrogen fuel cells, based on proton exchange membranes (PEM), are being developed and commercialized for heavy duty transportation applications. This technology enables fully electric, carbon free, transportation with long range and rapid refueling. Key to the success of fuel cells in this market is extended durability over 30,000 hours, the equivalent of one million miles of operation.
Application Deadline: 8 September 2024

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Farm Animal Health and Production
Summary of PhD Program:
Applications are invited for this 12-month Scholarship programme, which provides an opportunity for new graduates or recently qualified veterinarians to receive high-quality postgraduate training in farm animal studies under the supervision of experienced farm animal clinicians in the Cambridge Farm Animal Veterinary Services ambulatory and referral practice at the University of Cambridge. The emphasis of the programme is on gaining practical clinical experience in farm animal medicine and herd health, and will allow the Scholar to identify specific fields of farm animal work in which to specialise, either in preparation for Senior Clinical Training Scholarship programmes, or for specialist private practice.
