1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Developing and implementating of machine learning applications and data analysis in Translational Psychiatry

Summary of PhD Program:

The Project Group “Translational Machine Learning” offers a position as PhD student (m/f/d) to develop and implemente machine learning applications and data analysis in Translational Psychiatry. The project group “Translational Machine Learning” aims to develop clinically guided translational machine learning applications for the use in psychiatry. Specifically, we are developing and applying unsupervised and supervised machine learning techniques to answer a multitude of questions in severe mental disorders, ranging from affective and psychotic disorders to paraphilias or dementia.

Our focus lies in combining clinical expertise with state-of-the-art machine learning algorithms as well as interpretable AI approaches to develop clinically useful tools that can aid the diagnostic and therapeutic process in clinical care.

Among many other projects, we are currently using support vector machines to predict long- and short-term treatment response in schizophrenia and we are developing multi-view toolboxes featuring Sparse Partial Least Squares Analysis to derive complex brain signatures of childhood trauma, personality and neuroinflammation. Most recently, we have added interpretable AI techniques, such as Shapley Values, and prompt engineering techniques to our portfolio.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in An Urban Anthropology of the Nearby

Summary of PhD Program:

The Department of Economic Experimentation is highlighting “the nearby;” the physical and social space between the home and the intimately familiar, on the one hand, and the anonymous urban environment and larger world, on the other. We respond to concerns that this space, a crucial source of social experience, is increasingly under threat by processes including securitisation and the spread of electronic communications and delivery services.

We seek to support ethnographic projects that address the ongoing significance of the nearby in contemporary urban experience, by studying both individual perceptions and engagements with the nearby, and collective efforts to resuscitate and reshape it, including projects focusing on neighbourhood sociality, economic revitalisation, ecological concerns, the built environment, the provision of care, and artistic expression, among other possibilities. The regional focus is open, although synergies with departmental members’ research areas are welcome. The resulting research should contribute to both social anthropology and urban theory.
