1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Lithic lava fragments – secret recorders of eruptions pre-explosive history

Summary of PhD Program:

Explosive eruptions generate a range of types of rock types. Although studies typically focus on the vesicular (juvenile) material, the deposits also contain lithic fragments that represent portions of the preexisting volcano and are generally overlooked. These lithic fragments can be derived from a range of sources; lava domes that existed prior explosive phases of eruptions, or degassed or gas-poor parts of the juvenile magma. Others might represent the vent walls, as explosive eruptions often undergo vent modification and erosion, and could include parts of the hydrothermal system of the volcano.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in The delineation of pleural macrophages in malignant pleural effusions and identification of diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers to inform on future therapeutics

Summary of PhD Program:

Macrophages play key roles in tumour development, however very little is known about their pathogenic roles in various forms of malignant pleural disease. This exciting PhD sets out to define the macrophage populations in patients with mesothelioma and malignant pleural effusions through a combination of molecular techniques applied to fluid and tissue samples from pleural diseases. Through characterising the macrophage population, inflammatory profile and tumour microenvironment in a clinically well phenotyped cohort of patients, we aim to enhance our understanding of pathogenesis in these conditions with a view to identifying future clinical and therapeutic tools.
