The UltraBO project aims to design and implement novel parallel hybrid optimization algorithms for modern supercomputers. Many experiments reported in the literature demonstrate that high-quality results are obtained through hybridization. However, finding efficient and effective hybridization schemes is challenging and tedious. On the other hand, according to Top500 modern supercomputers are increasingly large (millions of cores), heterogeneous (various CPUs, GPU, FPGA, …) and less and less reliable (Mean Time Between Failures – MTBF<1h) making their programming increasingly complex. The design and implementation of parallel algorithms for these ultra-scale supercomputers is still in its infancy especially in combinatorial optimization.

CVI2 is a young group composed of highly motivated and active members. Their work focuses on innovative research topics such as 3D shape modelling, 6DOF object pose estimation, human behavior understating, and deep learning and is disseminated in top-tiers venues.

20. Postdoctoral Position in Automated Machine Learning (ML)

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The objective of this Post-doc is to help the Cebi company, which is a worldwide manufacturer of electromechanical components for the automotive industry, household appliances and industrial applications, to design and set up such an AutoML pipeline. Within this context, the candidate must commit to support the industrial partnership on a daily/weekly basis, which implies supporting the PhD students who are working under this partnership with Cebi: the first PhD student focusing on the prediction of failures/faults using GAN (Generative Adversarial Networks)-like approaches; the second student focusing on developing innovative maintenance scheduling policies using Reinforcement Learning.

Your role will be to contribute in the supervision of these two PhD students, which will lay the groundwork towards the design of the AutoML pipeline. Overall, you will have freedom to develop your own research agenda based on the company’s needs, while having a daily role in the management of the industrial partnership with the two PhD students.

22. Postdoctoral Position in Psychology

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The CBA Research Group forms part of the Institute of Cognitive Science and Assessment (COSA) and the Department of Behavioural and Cognitive Science. As a Research Group, we seek to explore students’ cognitive skills, personality, and environments with the use of educational technology to enable students to develop their full potential, increase the scientific understanding of a host of different target variables, and to foster lifelong learning across age levels. We do research on the theoretical understanding of these topics, conduct empirical investigations in diverse student (and other) populations, and ultimately, we ask how to foster important antecedents of later success in life.

23. Postdoctoral Position in Spaceborne Global Navigation Satellite System Reflectometry

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The Geophysics Laboratory (GL) focuses on climate, sea level variability and geodynamics. The primary goals include satellite geodesy of new remote sensing applications and obtaining reliable geodetic measurements of environmental change and assessing the influence of human and natural factors in those changes.

To do so, the group has developed a patented differential free-fall gradiometer as part of our activities in scientific metrology, advanced high-accuracy Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) techniques, provided interpretation of time variable gravity from space and improved the modelling of environmental effects on geodetic observations. In particular, the team investigates changes in the water cycle, the mass changes in the polar ice sheets, the dynamics of the Yellowstone Caldera. Additionally, the team focuses on space-borne GNSS-R for soil moisture and grazing angle GNSS-R for sea-ice studies over sea-ice covered regions.

24. Postdoctoral Position in Control of Satellite Formations and Space Systems

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The successful candidate will contribute to new control solutions for satellites and space systems with a main focus on a national research project in collaboration with LuxSpace Sàrl (https://www.luxspace.lu/), a member of the network of OHB companies. This project aims at the development of novel sensing and control approaches to enable a higher degree of autonomy for microsatellites in constellations and for the distributed control of autonomous formation flight of microsatellites. Together with LuxSpace, the research results will be implemented in a development tool and tested using suitable multi-satellite test scenarios. In addition, the candidate will also be involved in other research projects related to the control of spacecraft and space robots.

27. Postdoctoral Position in Preclinical Studies on Peroxisomal Biogenesis Disorders

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

We are looking for a highly skilled and scientifically driven researcher to work on a project that will usein vitro and in vivo models for finding new therapeutic approaches for Zellweger Spectrum Disorders. The project will be carried out as a collaboration between the Linster lab and the group of Dr. Nancy Braverman (McGill University), a leader in the study of peroxisome biology and related disorders for more than 15 years. It will include the validation of previously identified hit compounds in cellular models and deep phenotyping of existing zebrafish disease models to study the mechanisms underlying the disease. The project will also involve traveling to Montreal as part of the work will be implemented in the Braverman lab.

28. Postdoctoral Position in Magnetic Neutron Scattering

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The Postdoc will be a member of the Nanomagnetism Group, which is led by Associate Prof. Dr. Andreas Michels. The group carries out theoretical and simulation work to understand and develop the fundamentals of the magnetic small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) technique. More specifically, we use the continuum theory of micromagnetics for computing the magnetic SANS cross section of real materials, which is determined by microstructural-defect-induced spin disorder. Based on the theory work, we employ SANS for experimentally studying the mesoscopic spin structures of magnetic materials. Examples include Nd-Fe-B-based and rare-earth-free Mn-Bi permanent magnets, Heusler-type alloys, steels, or magnetic nanoparticles and ferrofluids.
