Amber is also a well-known and sought-after organic gemstone, fuelling violent mining economies from Myanmar to Russia, Ukraine, and Mexico, and constitutes a global market increasingly driven by Chinese demand. Amber thus offers a privileged entry point to interrogate the current moment characterised by growing extractivism, trade, environmental crises, and conflict. And it is a compelling lens through which we can address some of the key empirical and theoretical challenges posed by the Anthropocene.

Special machine learning approaches like reinforce-ment learning (RL) are getting increasingly popular to apply interactive pro-cesses for example in ChatGPT. When applied to hacking in offensive security, a continuous interaction between the services and the actors are required. The vulnerable service provides different answers for different user requests that makes it possible for the attacker to learn how to take advantage of a service vulnerability with customized inputs. This type of modelling matches the rein-forcement learning paradigm where the threat actor is the RL agent and the ser-vice is the environment.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in fault characterization (structural geology)

Summary of PhD Program:

Faults are complex structures that substantially influence the mechanical behavior and hydraulic connectivity of rock formations. One of the main challenges in studying faults (both seismic and aseismic portions) is the accessibility to fault’s 3D structure. Depending on the resolution of the measuring methods and the fault accessibility, fault geometric characteristics could be constrained and biased. Therefore, application of modern visualization techniques that can provide a more complete view of fault geometry and growth is essential.

In this regard, we are going to utilize state-of-the-art drone imaging in outcrops and deep learning on seismic data in order to reduce the uncertainty of fault data, characterize faults from different scales and hence get a better knowledge of fault 3D structure. Utilizing this multiscale approach, we will be able to improve fault scaling laws and fill the gaps in the global datasets of faults from different scales. A detailed project plan will be developed in collaboration with the successful candidate at the start of PhD.

10. Fully Funded PhD Position in Twentieth-century Norwegian liteature

Summary of PhD Program:

The PhD fellow will take part in the Norwegian Research Council-funded project “Made Abroad: Producing Norwegian World Literature in a Time of Rupture, 1900-1950” (MAP), led by Aina Nøding at the National Library of Norway. The project team includes Giuliano D’Amico at the Centre for Ibsen Studies. MAP uncovers the paths of Norwegian literature towards a world readership during the first dramatic half of the twentieth century.

In this period, Norwegian authors faced a series of ruptures and challenging circumstances: two world wars following new forms of nationalism, changes to traditional cultural, religious, and linguistic hegemonies, as well as international copyright laws, the introduction of global mass media, and new methods of book production and distribution. Significantly rewriting Norwegian literary history, MAP also challenges our view of centre-periphery dynamics of literary exchange across borders, forging a highly innovative approach combining reception and translation studies, sociology of literature, book and cultural history.
