Summary of PhD Program:

Gestational diabetes (GDM) may have serious short- and long-term consequences for both woman and child. Although glucose levels generally normalise after delivery, GDM increases the risk sevenfold for type-2-diabetes (T2D) within a ten-year period. Several studies show that the T2D risk after GDM can be reduced by lifestyle interventions and that early detection of impaired glucose tolerance is of great importance. There is currently, however, no satisfactory follow-up program after GDM leading to missed cases and delayed diagnosis of T2D. The objective of the PhD project is to measure and determine behavioural and biological factors important for disease progression from GDM to IGT/T2D, and to intervene by internet-based lifestyle modifications to reduce identified risks.

Summary of PhD Program:

Mononuclear cells from patients with malignant B-cell lymphomas, with and without N. mikurensis infection, are stimulated with bacterial and endothelial antigens and phenotyped regarding 23 different B-cell markers, and the generated multiparameter data is analyzed by Helios mass cytometry and cluster analyses. Comparisons are made with the B- and T-cells responses evoked by the infection in patients with normal immune defenses and without malignant B-cell lymphoma. In silico analyses of the N. mikurensis genome, bacterial extracts, and recombinant bacterial proteins and peptides are employed to develop high-throughput antibody diagnostics for N. mikurensis. The image flow cytometry method for antibody analysis is used for comparison.

Climate change is expected to cause severe climate stress on tree vegetation in northern Europe, especially by heat waves, drought, and flooding. Increased climate stress may lead to reduced growth and increased mortality, which in turn risks the many ecosystem services delivered by trees. Hence, it is important to plant tree species in forests and cities that can survive and thrive in the challenging growing conditions of the future climate.

The overall aim of this PhD-thesis project is to identify the long-term impacts of climatic stress (heat, drought, and flooding) on tree growth and vitality in forests and urban environments in SW-Sweden. To achieve this aim, the PhD-student will use a process-based ecosystem model and evaluate it against experimental data. Summary of PhD Program:

The methodology developed during our previous pit lake studies has been applied in a hazard assessment of an oil shale deposit in Sweden, the Kvarntorp pile. These findings need to be followed-up regarding transfer to nearby areas and the impact of chemical speciation. In Sweden, there are several other sites with enhanced abundance of NORM due to former industrial activities. In order to investigate the radiological status of these, quality assured methods for hazard assessment need to be established.

It is estimated that during the years 2007-2008 there were about 250 000 detached houses and 75 000 apartments having radon concentrations exceeding the reference level 200 Bq/m3; in 2015 it was estimated that measurements of indoor radon concentration have been performed in about 30 % of the detached houses. The risk for children has not been studied directly but merely by epidemiological studies. We have developed a mathematical model for calculation of radiation dose in various exposure situations. Since the model accounts for external as well as internal exposure, estimation of doses from inhalation of radon is possible with this model.
