31. Fully Funded PhD Position in Optimal usage of batteries

Summary of PhD Program:

The performance and lifetime of battery cells are to a large extent determined by how they are used, which is managed by a battery management system (BMS). At present, they act through more or less fixed constraints on measurable cell-external variables, i.e., current, voltage and temperature, to avoid accelerated aging and risk of thermal runaway. However, the decisive causes of the limitations are internal conditions that cannot be measured. Due to limited computing capacity and poor coupling between the simplistic battery models used and the cell-internal states, this normally results in an underutilization of the cells at the same time as they age prematurely.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in privacy-preserving federated learning

Summary of PhD Program:

Conventional machine learning approaches require centralizing all the data in the cloud. However, gathering the data at a central location requires data owners to give up control over their data, resulting in severe privacy and security risks. To address these shortcomings, federated learning is a recent machine learning paradigm that relies on the idea that knowledge (realized as trained models or gradients), instead of the raw data, should be shared.

Federated learning faces two major challenges: The vulnerability of models and gradients to inference attacks, which jeopardize user’s privacy, and the risk of poisoning attacks, where malicious or faulty clients can corrupt the global model by injecting mislabeled training data or modifying local model updates. The adoption of federated learning in sensitive applications such as healthcare, finance, or autonomous driving, depends on suitably addressing these challenges. The overarching goal of this project is to mathematically quantify the privacy and security guarantees–and their trade-off–of federated learning.

11. Fully Funded PhD Position in diagnostics of PEM based devices: fuel cells and electrolysers

Summary of PhD Program:

PEM fuel cells and electrolysers are attracting vast attention due to the key role that they can play in the decarbonization of many important sectors, such as industry, transport and heating. It is also expected that PEM fuel cells (and electrolysers) will be integrated into microgrids together with other renewable energy source with the purpose to enable a better balanced and flexible electricity supply. 12. Fully Funded PhD Position in Storage and flexibility for enhancement of grid capacity

Summary of PhD Program:

The structure of the electric power system is currently developing rapidly, and new knowledge is needed to guide the society to yield solutions which are robust, resilient, and sustainable. As a PhD student at the department of Electrical Engineering, you will be part of this challenging and exciting development.

A decrease in CO2 emissions is necessary to reduce the global warming. One component in this reduction is to reduce the use of fossil-based fuels in electricity generation and shift production towards renewable energy sources such as wind-power and solar-power. The shift to such sources comes with an additional challenge in the inherent variability of such energy sources as the level of possible production changes with meteorological factors beyond our control. A fundamental property for an electrical power system in a stationary operation is that the produced electric power must equal the electric power consumed in the loads.

13. Fully Funded PhD Position in Cementitious Materials

Summary of PhD Program:

Your work will be an essential first step towards standardisation and mass production of these new types of binders ensuring their durability and technical properties. An important -often overlooked- step for these new binders that will be addressed in this project is the impact of carbon dioxide on the material response. You will investigate the positive and negative impact of carbonation in cementitious materials, i.e. the potential for carbon sequestration whilst balancing potential material degradation mechanisms that affect the material at the micro-structural scale. The main challenge is to maximize carbon sequestration before cracks appear.

Your research will investigate the effects of carbonation on the physico-chemical properties of the cementitious system, including hydrate phase assemblage, binding capacity, pore structure, changes in effective permeability and microcracking. The dimensions considered for the research span from the bulk response at continuum scale to the full 3D response at submicron scale.

19. Fully Funded PhD Position in Solid and Structural Mechanics

Summary of PhD Program:

The goal of this project is to develop a method that can determine the maintenance and reinvestment efforts that minimize the Life Cycle Cost (LCC) of an individual S&C.
