Summary of PhD Program:

High-temperature polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (HT-PEMFC) are promising for sustainable energy supply. In contrast to conventional fuel cells, they show a higher tolerance to fuel impurities and a simpler water management. This makes them particularly interesting for use in hot climates and high-power applications such as trucks and ships. Liquid phosphoric acid immobilised in polybenzimidazole membranes serves as a proton conductor. The wetting of the electrode by the phosphoric acid results in the formation of the so-called three-phase boundary between the phosphoric acid (proton transport), the supplied reaction gases (molecular transport) and the platinum catalyst (electron transport). This effectively links several transport phenomena that need to be better understood within the framework of the project.

The Chair of Systems Engineering of Electrical Storage has been founded recently and is a member of the newly established Bavarian Center for Battery Technology (BayBatt). The research focuses on the optimal design and layout of battery storage systems from the cell upwards. Soils are dynamic systems and soil physical properties are constantly changing in time and in space. For example, the temporal variation of soil hydraulic properties affects water dynamics, such as evaporation/transpiration fluxes, groundwater recharge and solute transport and leaching. However, these changes are not well understood, and they are not included in our theoretical concepts. We hypothesize that incorporating the temporal changes of soil hydraulic properties into state-of-the-art hydrological models will improve prediction of water dynamics, especially in the prospect of a changing climate.

This project focusses on the production and traits of humus from decomposing deadwood which is considered as potential source of carbon sequestration in forest ecosystems. It combines field observations, chemical and spectral analyses and microbial processes to assess the quality, stability and functions of tree species specific deadwood humus. Stable isotopes (13C, 15N, 18O) will be applied to quantify microbial process rates including microbial growth, turnover, carbon use efficiency, respiration and nitrogen fixation. In cooperation with project partners, the relationship between chemical-microbial traits and microbial communities of deadwood humus is being investigated.

Our research is focused on elucidating and quantifying physico-chemical principles of dynamic self-organization and transport processes in soft and living matter on different length and time scales. We are recruiting a talented individual to join our team as a graduate student. Within the PhD project, we will explore the mechanism and application scope of enzymatic and photooxidative fragmentation of microplastic particles. Our laboratory lays the molecular foundation by biochemically producing and biophysically characterizing enzymes that mediate oxidative and radical-mediated polyolefin degradation.

By investigating the degradation and fragmentation of polyolefins as a function of light, temperature, and solvent conditions, the project will provide unprecedented insight into degradation mechanisms and will thereby identify innovative strategies for prospectively removing microplastics from the environment. The thesis research is embedded within the collaborative research centre 1357 ‘Microplastics’ recently renewed by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. The highly collaborative project will be conducted in vibrant and close collaboration with polymer chemists, biochemists, biologists, and geoscientists.
