Our research group has performed single-cell/spatial omics studies, identifying for instance several cell states within the oligodendrocyte lineage in development and disease (Science 2016, Dev Cell 2018, Nature Medicine 2018, Nature 2019, Nature Biotechnology 2021, 2022, Neuron 2022, Nature 2023, among others). Our recent findings suggest that oligodendrocyte lineage cells might present other functional properties than previously thought, transitioning for instance to disease-associated states. In addition, our results also suggest that single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with multiple sclerosis susceptibility might be operational in oligodendrocyte lineage cells.

We employ an interdisciplinary approach to understand the processing and storage of silk proteins in the spiders’ glands. Modulating this immune response may be beneficial in terms of neurological outcomes.

Our group has developed the first biomimetic method to spin artificial spider silk fibers and succeeded in establishing a production and purification method of recombinant silk proteins that results in unprecedented protein yields (Andersson et al. Nat Chem Biol. 2017; Schmuck et al. Mater Today. 2021; Arndt et al. Adv Funct Mater. 2022). Furthermore, we have sequenced a whole spider genome of outstanding quality and have analyzed the transcriptome of the silk glands.

Our research group consists of two PhD students, two technicians, four post docs and a bioinformatician, and is funded by the European Research Council, Swedish Research Council, FORMAS and Center for Innovative Medicine. The research group of Associate Professor Dr. Federico Iovino is the only group at Karolinska Institutet performing research on bacterial infections of the brain. The two major clinical problems in the management of brain bacterial infections are that 1) Antibiotics have poor capability to penetrate through the blood-brain barrier, and 2) Even if there is partial penetration, antibiotic-resistance is a constant threat. This doctoral project aims to identify new antimicrobial proteins and peptides released by human cells. In addition, this doctoral project aims to characterize the mechanisms used by bacterial pathogens to injure neurons by releasing pore-forming toxins.

Summary of PhD Program:

The Department of Cardiology is looking for a PhD student to join Dr. Bahira Shahim and her team to investigate the mechanisms underlying the association between mitral valve prolapse and malignant arrhythmias. The team consists of experts and surgeon in valvular heart disease, arrytmic disease and heart failure as well as the Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (CMR) Group that have developed innovative CMR analysis approaches such as T1 mapping, extracellular volume (ECV)-fraction and MRI-fingerprinting to assess diffuse fibrosis and assessment of cardiac hemodynamics using four-dimensional flow magnetic resonance imaging (4D Flow MRI). The team also collaborates with a team at Bioclinicum with a long experience of creating valve biobanks, sample preparations and storage that will contribute to genetic analysis of the mitral valve apparatus.
