1. Fully Funded PhD Position in single-cell/spatial omics

Summary of PhD Program:

Our research group has performed single-cell/spatial omics studies, identifying for instance several cell states within the oligodendrocyte lineage in development and disease (Science 2016, Dev Cell 2018, Nature Medicine 2018, Nature 2019, Nature Biotechnology 2021, 2022, Neuron 2022, Nature 2023, among others). Our recent findings suggest that oligodendrocyte lineage cells might present other functional properties than previously thought, transitioning for instance to disease-associated states. In addition, our results also suggest that single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with multiple sclerosis susceptibility might be operational in oligodendrocyte lineage cells.

16. Fully Funded PhD Position in hypervolemia and hemodynamic adaptations

Summary of PhD Program:

Exercise-induced improvement of maximal oxygen uptake capacity (VO2max) occurs through adaptations of both peripheral and central factors. Previous research shows that the respiratory capacity of the mitochondria exceeds the oxygen transport from the cardiorespiratory system, which means that VO2max is primarily limited by cardiac output and the central factors have a significant role in increasing VO2max. There is a direct link between the effect of exercise on blood volume increase and increased cardiac output. Both traditional cardio training and interval training produce similar increases in VO2max despite their large differences in intensity and duration.

18. Fully Funded PhD Position in Perinatal Neuroscience

Summary of PhD Program:

Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy is a major cause of neonatal death and long-term disability globally. Subsequent inflammation after the brain injury has been identified to be an important factor for neurological outcomes. Most studies have focused on early immunological changes following cerebral ischemia, but this strategy excludes many children from therapy since they present too late. Our group was the first to find long-lasting inflammation with activated T cells in the brain parenchyma up to five months after cerebral hypoxic ischemia in rodents, and that peripheral lymphocytes in animals exposed to a neonatal brain injury are proliferating in response to brain antigens several months later. Modulating this immune response may be beneficial in terms of neurological outcomes.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Virus-Host interactions

Summary of PhD Program:

Increasing evidence indicates the role of imbalanced immunometabolism in the virus-induced pathology. These cellular functions are regulated by post-translational modifications by ubiquitin and ubiquitin-like polypeptides (UbLs), such as ISG15. Interfering with the UbL-dependent processes through deconjugation is a powerful strategy used by the virus to dysregulate cell intrinsic defenses and promote infection. Viral proteases encoded by RNA viruses like the Coronavirus papain-like protease (PLpro) and Nairovirus OTU-like protease (Crimean Congo hemorrhagic fever virus, CCHFV-L1 protein) has deubiquitinase (DUB) and deISGylase (DISG) activity, which can cause antiviral and metabolic reprogramming.

11. Fully Funded PhD Position in Nutrition

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD project focuses on the promotion of healthy lifestyle behaviours in the first 2000 days of life to prevent overweight and obesity using mobile health (mHealth) interventions in primary child healthcare. The first part of this project aims to study the novel implementation of an evidence-based program for obesity prevention and the promotion of healthy lifestyle behaviours in young children within primary child healthcare using a cluster randomized controlled trial. The second part of the project will evaluate the feasibility of a parent-focused mHealth intervention to promote healthy lifestyle behaviours from infancy in a pilot randomized controlled trial. The PhD candidate’s responsibilities will include coordinating data collection, processing data, conducting statistical analysis, developing intervention content, as well as writing scientific articles for the thesis. This project includes both quantitative and qualitative components.

12. Fully Funded PhD Position in Machine Learning

Summary of PhD Program:

As a Ph.D. student, you will continue these advancements by exploring and implementing novel machine learning architectures for enhanced quantification of 4D Flow MRI data. Additionally, by coupling these developments to physics-informed image analysis, you will be using 4D Flow MRI to provide novel insights into complex hemodynamic behavior, with specific focus on improved cardiac care. Based in a highly translational research environment, the Ph.D. project specifically seeks to

  • (1) utilize advanced machine learning techniques to enable spatiotemporal super-resolution 4D Flow MRI;
  • (2) couple these findings to developments in physics-informed image analysis to validate recovery of intracardiac pressure gradients from 4D Flow MRI; and
  • (3) investigate how super-resolution intracardiac pressure gradients expands our understanding of complex cardiac disease.

You will have access to state-of-the-art MRI systems and computational resources, and will directly deploy and evaluate novel research developments in a direct clinical environment.
