7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Deep Learning Theory and Differential Geometry

Summary of PhD Program:

As our new PhD Student, your task will be to study modern deep learning approaches and develop a theoretical understanding based on differential geometry. In particular, deep neural networks perform surprisingly well on new unseen data, which is known as generalization. However, previous machine learning theory cannot fully explain this behavior and thus new approaches have emerged. A promising explanation is that during the training phase, the models are implicitly regularized which is attributed to the properties of the optimization technique. Intuitively, an example is that stochastic optimizers tend to find flatter minima in the complex loss landscape which is supposed to correlate with generalization. The behavior of the neural network also depends on the architectural choices and the additional training techniques applied during the learning phase. The goal of this project is to approach these concepts using differential geometry, providing a new theoretical framework and developing practical methodologies accordingly.

27. Fully Funded PhD Position in System-level integrated circuit design and modeling for scalable quantum computing architectures

Summary of PhD Program:

We are working on scalable electronic architectures based on semiconductor spin quantum bits (qubits) to make the vision of a universal quantum computer reality. For scaling up the number of qubits into the millions, it is crucial to move parts of the control electronics closer to the qubits. To achieve this, we design and implement cryogenic integrated circuits for qubit control and readout in state-of-the-art CMOS technologies. Since qubits are extremely sensitive and operate in temperatures at low millikelvin levels, the requirements on power consumption, noise and area are severe. For this reason, it is necessary to develop new and groundbreaking architectures and circuit topologies. Modeling electronics and their interfaces to qubits in this challenging environment is an essential part of this.

29. Fully Funded PhD Position in Climate stress induced biogenic emissions and their impact on atmospheric composition

Summary of PhD Program:

As a PhD candidate you will be part of the Helmholtz Young Investigator Group “ClimStress – Climate stress impacts on forest emissions and aerosol pollution” led by Dr. Eva Pfannerstill at the Institute for Energy and Climate Research (IEK-8) within Forschungszentrum Jülich. Globally, forests emit more than 80% of volatile organic compounds, which are reactive drivers of atmospheric chemistry and precursors to air pollutants. Since climate change stresses forests (through stressors like, e.g., drought, heat, or herbivory), their volatile organic compound emissions are changing, with potential impacts on climate and air quality. The goal of this project is to enhance our understanding of the future impact of forest emissions under climate change on atmospheric chemistry.

17. Fully Funded PhD Position in ecology with a focus on the role of (deep) root dynamics in permafrost-climate feedback

Summary of PhD Program:

Permafrost soils contain twice as much carbon as the atmosphere, which they have protected for millennia. As arctic temperatures soar and the rate of permafrost thaw accelerates, there is a growing concern about large carbon losses from permafrost soils into the atmosphere. Even though around 80% of plant biomass in the arctic tundra is belowground, the crucial role of roots in carbon cycling remains unquantified. Roots can promote new carbon storage but also stimulate losses of old soil carbon. Here, deep roots are likely to be disproportionally important, as they increasingly interact with newly-thawed, vulnerable soils. Yet, few studies include root measurements, particularly in deeper soils. In this project we will quantify the role of deep roots in the carbon-climate feedback from thawing permafrost soils by using a long-term field experiment combined with a complementing microcosm experiment. The results will define the importance of root dynamics in deep soils and strongly improve our ability to predict feedbacks from arctic tundra to climate change.

1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Vascular Research

Summary of PhD Program:

This project focuses on the functions of MIF proteins on dendritic cells and T cells. MIF is considered to be an innate cytokine/chemokine which exerts most of its roles by controlling cells of the innate arm of the immune system. However, recent evidence also suggests a critical role for MIF and its homolog MIF-2 in the control of T-cell activity. In the project, these novel unexpected effects will be studied via well-established basic immunological techniques as well as innovative and technologically advanced functional leucocyte assays. Systematic comparison of MIF, MIF-2, and their receptors will lead to an in-depth mechanistic exploration of the currently unknown MIF-family induced interplay of dendritic cells and T cells at the crossroad of the innate and adaptive immune responses.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position

Summary of PhD Program:

According to the LUNG-SAFE study, 10% of all patients admitted to an ICU and 23% of those requiring mechanical ventilation fulfill the criteria of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). ARDS qualifies as a life-threatening disease with significant mortality rates ranging from 15-52% from mild to severe forms despite modern treatment strategies. The high chances of irreversible organ dysfunction due to fibroproliferative remodeling result in clinically non-acceptable morbidity rates. We face a high ARDS prevalence that was dramatically fueled by the recent COVID-19 pandemic and an unmet medical need for the development of future drug candidates to reduce the burden of ARDS to patients and society.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position

Summary of PhD Program:

High systolic blood pressure, pulsatile motion and the so called “windsock effect” of the aorta are factors that must be considered when it comes to deployment of stent grafts, especially in the ascending aorta. These forcescan cause distal migration of the stent-graft and therefore increase the risk of unintended coverage of aortic branches and unsuccessful treatment of theunderlying pathology. Currently available options for cardiac output reduction such as “Partial right inflow occlusion” or “Rapid right ventricular pacing” require additional vascular access and material. Therefore, they may hold certain risks.

Application Deadline: Open until filled

Apply now

4. Fully Funded PhD Position

Summary of PhD Program:

The optimal oversizing percentage of endografts for treatment of aortic pathologies is unknown, with recommendations ranging from 0-30% depending on the type of pathology, stentgraft design, and physician preference. This is becoming increasingly interesting in proximal landing zones in the ascending aorta, after previous open repair.

Application Deadline: Open until filled

Apply now

5. Fully Funded PhD Position

Summary of PhD Program:

Currently the main limitation of aortic arch devices such as inner branch devices is the wide proximal landing zone, which precludes treatment in more than 50% of cases (Benfor et al 2022 EJCTS). Although placing an extra device in the ascending aorta may increase feasibility in some patients, diffuse enlargement or involvement of the proximal ascending aorta precludes treatment if one does not deal with the ostium of the coronary arteries and the aortic valve. This problem has also been identified by Cardiologists as one of the main limiting factors for TAVI procedures.

Application Deadline: Open until filled

Summary of PhD Program:

Hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy 9 (HSAN9) is a rare fatal neurological disease caused by mis- and nonsense mutations in the gene encoding for Tectonin β-propeller repeat containing protein 2 (TECPR2). While we previously found that TECPR2 is required for lysosomal consumption of autophagosomes (Fraiberg et al. 2021) and ER-to-Golgi transport (Stadel et al. 2015), it remains elusive how exactly TECPR2 is involved in autophagy and secretion and what downstream sequels arise from defective TECPR2 due to its involvement in these processes. Recently, we addressed these questions by determining which proteins depend on TECPR2 for their trafficking out of the ER and sorting within the cell.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Structurally and microstructurally investigating mixed oxide (MOX)

Summary of PhD Program:

Mixed oxide (U,Pu)O2 nuclear fuels (MOX) have been deployed widely in nuclear power reactor fleets around the world, forming a subsequent dominant component of spent nuclear fuel disposal inventories. Compared to standard UO2 light water reactor (LWR) fuel, MOX fuels are chemically more intricate, and they undergo significant heterogenization of the fuel structure with increasing burn up (fuel fission) in the reactor. Such processes create pertinent challenges for MOX spent fuel disposal, particularly regarding the fuel matrix chemical and structural stability. As part of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) funded project Transient, a PhD position is open for a motivated and qualified individual with a background in materials chemistry, physics or radiochemistry to investigate the structural and microstructural stability of irradiated MOX materials and model systems.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Exascale Simulation of Power Grids

Summary of PhD Program:

With the increasing implementation of controllable grid elements in electricity grids, the complexity of the regulation and control of grid operation has increased significantly. In particular, the increased use of converter-based grid elements brings additional flexibility potentials for grid management, the use of which, however, cannot be trivially determined. For instance, powerful HVDC stations based on VSC technology can have a significant (positive) influence on the AC grid not only by controllable active power flows but also by providing reactive power and other grid services. To be able to handle the increasing complexity of grid planning and operation, one promising approach is the massively parallelized simulation of energy grids using (exascale) supercomputers.

Application Deadline: Open until filled

1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Carbon dynamics of coastal wetland ecosystems

Summary of PhD Program:

Tidal marshes and mangroves are highly valued ecosystems, among others for nature-based climate mitigation (through carbon sequestration) and climate adaptation (through coastal erosion prevention). Their dense vegetation protects shorelines from waves, currents and erosion risks. Furthermore, coastal marshes and mangroves are considered the most efficient ecosystems on Earth in terms of carbon sequestration per surface area. Yet, many tidal marsh and mangrove areas have been historically converted in human land use, leading to the loss of the valuable ecosystem services. Nowadays, projects are carried out to (re-)create marshes and mangroves, but it remains to be proven how efficient such newly created marshes and mangroves are for carbon sequestration and erosion protection.
