Queen’s University Belfast, Northern Ireland invites online application for multiple funded PhD Programs / fully funded PhD positions in various research areas.

Candidates interested in fully funded PhD positions can check the details and may apply as soon as possible. Interested and eligible applicants may submit their online application for PhD programs via the University’s Online Application Portal.

Economic sectors worldwide are facing growing risks due to environmental changes which impact biodiversity and socio-economic sectors. Physical and transition risks are often neglected by macrofinancial and industrial sectors. This fully-funded, interdisciplinary PhD within the new Climate+ Biodiversity+ Water Co-Centre will map and evaluate risks to key sectors from environmental changes and identify legal, finance, and policy interventions to support transformative solutions.

Apply now

The aims of this interdisciplinary study will be to determine the effect of stoma on the faecal and urinary microbiota, determine how members of the microbiota contribute to adverse effects for ostomates and to use this information to adapt existing or develop new adhesives / accessories to neutralize adverse bacterial impact, reducing risk of skin trauma.

Apply now

Follow FellowshipBard for daily updates!

Facebook

Twitter

Linkedin

Telegram Channel

Traditional approaches in research of the physical layer of communication systems and their security rely on rigorous mathematical modelling of the system and environment. Such approaches rely on various simplifications that undermine the fidelity of the models and the efficiency of the designs in highly dynamic wireless environments. As the complexity of the environment, and the demand for more efficient and adaptable/reconfigurable physical layers, increases in the context of 5G and 6G, traditional approaches become less effective.

Apply now

We need to ensure that the hardware that will underpin future comms infrastructure is secure and trustworthy. Cyber vulnerabilities in hardware cannot be easily patched (unlike software). PhD projects on this topic will address the open research challenge of how to deliver trusted and resilient hardware for future fully virtualised communications systems. Research into post-quantum cryptography and linking advanced cryptographic approaches (e.g identity-based encryption) and hardware security to achieve hardware-rooted security could provide verifiability, anti-tampering, anti-counterfeiting properties to future communication infrastructures.

Apply now

In recent years, AI has been proposed as a powerful tool for automating network management and orchestration operations. In the context of future open NoN-environments, interconnected or integrated network components contributed from homogeneous or heterogeneous operators (terrestrial, space, cloud/edge hyperscale providers…) are expected to be managed through distributed AI-based network intelligence with their own local operation policies and resolve possible AI-conflicts. PhD projects on this topic will address the technical challenges of end-to-end performance optimality and consistency through harmonised AI decision-making, and open research questions about trustworthy AI for network security; for instance, how can AI accurately detect and prevent cyber-attacks in future open networks and how to ensure the AI component has not itself been attacked?

Apply now

In space communication infrastructures (satellite/UAV/High-altitude platform systems) there can be a wide variety of open integration options with terrestrial network platforms, introducing distinct research challenges in performance, energy efficiency and security and privacy in different scenarios. Network resources provided by global satellite communication systems can be simultaneously shared by multiple regional terrestrial networks, and hence, a PhD project on this topic will address key research questions on how we can engineer novel secure/resilient and high performing solutions against potential attacks whilst optimising the system performance.

Apply now

The Mathematical Science Research Centre, School of Mathematics & Physics at Queen’s University Belfast, is seeking a highly motivated PhD student to join our team for a project focused on the mathematical modelling of infectious diseases. This position offers an exciting opportunity to work at the intersection of mathematics, epidemiology, and public health, contributing to our understanding and management of infectious disease spread.

Apply now

Water quality surveillance is vital for sectors like oil and gas, waste management, and environmental marine management. Current manual sampling and laboratory analysis are expensive and lack real-time analytics. In-line measurement approaches provide real-time evaluation within systems, but existing automated edge technologies are limited to specific parameters like pH, temperature, and certain particulates. Detecting small biological and mineral matter in water is challenging, hindering accurate assessment in natural settings. This limitation hampers effective water quality monitoring, driving the need for real-time in-line systems.

Apply now

The bursaries shall assist the students in those expenses and outlays (including the cost of books approved by the School of Law) for legal research/studies involving visits outside Northern Ireland in pursuance of their legal studies, provided that the purpose is approved by the School of Law. No award of a bursary shall be made if it has the effect of reducing an award or grant from any other source. Grants from the income of the fund may be made in lieu of or in addition to such bursaries to persons qualified as above, who may thereby be assisted in the promotion or encouragement of legal education.

Apply now

This project aims to address the issue of dog fouling from an interdisciplinary One Health perspective, supporting Strategy 2030 and BRCD missions. Its objectives are to: (i) quantify and characterize zoonotic pathogens and the associated AMR risks in dog faeces in public spaces and contiguous environmental matrices; (ii) collate data on corresponding zoonotic diseases in people and estimate public health impacts at population level; (iii) explore motivations and behaviours of dog owners and others using public spaces in relation to fouling; (iv) devise scalable digital methodologies to assess fouling incidence in order to provide reliable data to assess intervention impact;

Apply now

Hormone disrupting chemicals termed “obesogens” may play a role in promoting obesity. However, researchers establishing causal links between chemical exposure and obesity have highlighted research gaps (Heindel et al., 2022). Potential obesogens include dietary additives – monosodium glutamate (Shannon et al., 2019a) and environmental contaminants – persistent organic pollutants (Shannon et al., 2019b) which have been shown to disrupt secretion of the satiety signalling hormone GLP-1 in vitro.

Apply now

1.
