Our research uses a molecular systems neurobiology approach to unravel the critical role that different cell populations of spinal cord play in motor function, and what happens to these neuronal circuits in neurological disorders such as spasticity. Spasticity often occurs after a spinal cord injury, stroke or diseases like cerebral palsy, and affects more than 12 million people world-wide. It is a condition that causes involuntary and painful muscle spasms, and no effective treatments currently exists. Furthermore, our laboratory is also interested in studying the aberrant patterning of the spinal cord in neurodevelopmental disorders such as cerebral palsy. Our overarching goal is to understand the mechanisms underlying disorders of the spinal cord, allowing us to develop novel treatments.

Apply now

The position is placed under the responsibility of Professor Edoardo Altamura. For at least a century, under the influence of a positivist philosophy of science popular in the first half of the twentieth century, a large number of economists have maintained that economics should, as a scientific discipline, free itself from any normative presupposition and renounce any analysis of norms. Today, several pressing social problems, including the ecological crisis and rising inequality, have shown the need for in-depth consideration of the issue of coordination of individual activities and evaluation of individual and collective choices.

Apply now

The Institute of Political Studies of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences is calling for a position of FNS doctoral student in order to complete the team of the project Normativity and its Foundations in Lausanne School and Normative Economics , financed by the Swiss National Science Foundation – FNS (Division I), domiciled at the Walras Pareto Center for interdisciplinary studies of economic thought and politics of the University of Lausanne. The PhD project will address process- and methodology-oriented questions in alpine hydrogeology and geophysics. The research will be developed in the Val d’Ursé catchment, located in the Bernina mountain range in the canton of Graubünden, Switzerland. This catchment is underlain by crystalline bedrock, where groundwater storage and flow are controlled by a dense network of fractures and faults. It has a large rock glacier on its north-east facing slope, which contributes to water and solute fluxes through freeze-thaw cycles.

Apply now

In the proposed project, the student will study nutritional, metabolic and epigenetic requirements in the formation of engineered human osteogenic tissues and in bones. They will apply RNAseq, gene editing and advanced imaging techniques to investigate specific pathways that impact the tissue formation. They will design novel approaches that target metabolic pathways in the bone stem cell niche to promote tissue repair. This project will build on our recent progress in this area (Okuchi et al Nature Materials 2021, Habib SJ et al Trends in Cell Biology 2022).

1.
