ETH Zürich, Switzerland invites online application for multiple fully funded PhD Programs in various research areas. Candidates interested in fully funded PhD positions can check the details and may apply as soon as possible.

The successful candidate will work in close cooperation with Dr. Tomás Bartoletti and the doctoral and postdoctoral researchers of the professorship ‘History of the Modern World’. The candidate is expected to present interim results at national and international conferences, write the Ph.D. thesis and publish two scholarly articles in peer-reviewed journals during the four years of the contract.

The Ph.D. project should be concerned with the history of agricultural sciences, particularly entomology and phytopathology, and capitalism in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It can address one or several of the following topics: the history of the tobacco industry in Switzerland and/or Europe; the history of pest and plant diseases; the trajectories pest control research; the growth of chemical companies producing insecticides; pesticides and agricultural development; or other subjects related to the history of economic entomology in plantations.

Apply now

Aseismic processes can play a first-order role in the build-up to large earthquakes, but they are hard to detect and monitor. The strong recent advances in deep learning powered seismic monitoring is an opportunity to fundamentally improve the detection and characterisation of the subtle seismic signatures that aseismic processes leave behind.

The doctoral candidate will i) develop new DL methods that are tailored to characterise the seismic signatures of aseismic slip during earthquake sequences, in particular stress migration and rotation, strain acceleration as captured by repeating earthquakes, and fluid pressure build-up as evidenced by seismic swarms; and ii) study the predictive value of aseismic observations for anticipating large earthquakes.

Apply now

Follow FellowshipBard for daily updates!

Facebook

Twitter

Linkedin

The projects will combine basic and translational research to develop novel synthetic biology-inspired principles. Rational programming the behavior of human cells will shape future biomedical applications. This may include the design of novel biosensors, gene switches and genetic closed-loop circuits, the synthesis of novel chemical structures to interface and actuate cellular activities or to design programmable cellular implantable devices.

Apply now

Currently, soils store a large fraction of the CO2 emitted into the atmosphere. However, whether they will continue to do so in the future is unclear, as soil fertility potentially limits the amount of primary production (carbon fixation) and belowground carbon storage. Current experimental approaches reveal a complex interaction between the above- and belowground ecosystem, and its chemical environment. A historical perspective, i.e. looking at past changes in soil fertility and carbon storage, can elucidate these processes on timescales that exceed experimental approaches (decades to millennia).

Apply now

The goal of this project is to leverage advanced real-time sensor fusion and a novel personal mobility device with holonomic capabilities to achieve highly reactive shared control at different levels of autonomy. You will be responsible for implementing clean stable software, researching novel methods of shared control navigation using highly efficient sensor fusion and delivering novel algorithms in motion control and scene understanding for navigation.

Apply now

The research group of Prof. Müller is looking for a highly motivated candidate with a strong interest in material development and characterization, structure-property relationships to yield highly effective, low-temperature CO2 sorbents for direct air capture. This research will be performed in close collaboration with the Mezzenga group at ETH Zürich.

Apply now

The International Political Economy and Environmental Politics group is based both at the Center for Comparative and International Studies (CIS) and the Institute of Science, Technology and Policy (ISTP). Its research and teaching focus on examining the role of citizens and consumers as well as national socio-economic and political conditions in providing solutions to transnational environmental and economic problems.

Apply now

We aim to establish custom-built small-scale laboratory plots which will enable the simultaneous assessment of soil erosion and MPs and NPs movement through the soil profile, both vertically and laterally. These aspects will be assessed across a range of soil textures, slope, and rainfall intensities to understand how plot characteristics influence MPs and NPs transport. Using model particulate plastics that have previously been developed in-house containing trace metals will enable quantification of plastic particles throughout the experimental system.

Apply now

The transition to a net-zero-carbon-emissions (net-zero) energy system is resulting an increase in decentralised energy technologies at building and district scales. These decentralised technologies raise many questions relating to the technical and economic efficiency of solutions at building and district scales, as well as effective policy measures to provide effective and fair incentives.

Apply now

The study partially funded by Federal Agency for Agriculture (Bundesamt für Landwirtschaft, BLW) comprises a cooperation approach between ETH Zurich, SUISAG (Swiss pig farming industry) and Minitube (a world-wide leading supplier of systems for the field of assisted animal reproduction) in which we will develop an automatable warming system for vitrified embryos as well as a non-surgical ET procedure performed at the site of the recipient female on-farm.

Apply now

Ultrasound technologies are routinely used both in fertility clinics and in veterinary diagnostics. More recent 3D and 4D approaches coupled with colored doppler ultrasonography applications including colored Power doppler for blood flow estimation in small vessels are developing. Human and bovine follicle maturation processes largely share similarities. Using cattle as model for human follicle growth dynamics, the goal of this interdisciplinary project is to improve the outcome of ovarian hormonal stimulation.

Apply now

The ALIVE Initiative of ETH Zurich aims to elucidate and apply the design principles of living systems as a basis for sustainable, intelligent, and resilient materials and technologies of the future. Our approach encompasses studying natural systems and developing biohybrid or biomimetic synthetic systems bridging across scales, from the nano to the macro and structural scale.

Apply now

1.
