We focus on cases where a genetically tractable lineage has evolved unique characters whose mechanisms are accessible to genetic and genomic dissection. The postdoc will develop methods for, carry out, and analyze fungal transgenesis experiments and high-throughput sequencing screens to identify and validate variant genes underlying phenotypic differences between fungal species. Responsibilities will include genetic manipulations; troubleshooting and verification; phenotyping assays, including growth and metabolism; and computational and statistical data analysis. The postdoc will lead writeup and publication of experimental findings. Our postdoctoral projects are a great fit for post-Ph.D. trainees looking to hone their skills in evolutionary genetics and emerge onto the job market in a few years with a great molecular story.

9. Postdoctoral Scholar- Biology of Aging – Department of Nutritional Science and Toxicology

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowships:

The Department of Nutritional Sciences and Toxicology at the University of California, Berkeley seeks Postdoctoral Scholars to join an interdisciplinary research team study and to work under the supervision of Professor Danica Chen, in the area of biology of aging. One of the most fundamental questions in biology is how we age. The past decades have witnessed a significant revision of a traditional view that aging is simply a random and passive process that is solely driven by entropy. In fact, the aging process is regulated genetically and lifespan can be extended by single gene mutations. Our research aims to understand molecular and cellular mechanisms that regulate the aging process and explore therapeutic targets to slow aging and even reverse aging-associated degeneration. The most intriguing aspect of pharmaceutical intervention that targets the aging pathways is that, instead of targeting a specific disease, it has the potential of ameliorating a wide array of seemingly unrelated diseases associated with aging, such as cancer, tissue degeneration, metabolic syndrome, and immune dysfunction.

10. Postdoctoral Scholar – Cellular Mechanobiology and Engineering of active brown adipose tissue – Department of Nutritional Sciences & Toxicology

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowships:

The Stahl Lab at UC Berkeley in the Department of Nutritional Sciences and Toxicology seeks applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar in Cellular Mechanobiology and Engineering of active brown adipose tissue. The overarching goal of the Stahl laboratory is to advance human health by re-engineering lipid fluxes in the context of obesity-related disorders to protect certain tissues, such as the liver, from detrimental effects of ectopic lipid deposition and to generate metabolically highly active tissues that can serve as a save destination for excess fatty acids. Using both in vitro (cell culture) and in vivo (mouse models) approaches the Postdoc will design, perform, and analyze experiments to determine the role of cellular mechanobiology signals, particularly those involving force generation by myosins, and the reciprocal relationship to extracellular matrix properties in adipocyte biology. Experiments will range from the quantitation of cellular tension by atomic force microscopy, to the synthesis and characterization of hydrogels, to cell biology, and the creation and maintenance of transgenic animal lines. The Postdoc will be expected to lead publication of results in peer reviewed journals and to contribute to the overall oversight of the Stahl lab.
