Candidates interested in Postdoctoral Fellowships can check the details and may apply as soon as possible.

1. Postdoctoral Position

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

In this project, you will study the complex polar atmosphere-ocean-ice system from an atmospheric perspective. To do this, you will run the state-of-the-art regional climate model RACMO for the present and future and analyse and publish the results in scientific journals. For the future projections, output of global climate models with different patterns of climate change, so called storylines, will be used. The model results obtained will shed new light on various aspects of the polar climate system, such as ice and water clouds, the hydrological cycle and the surface mass balance of the Greenland and Antarctic Ice Sheets. A strong background in climate science and the ability to work with climate models and critically assess their output are vital for a successful execution of this project.

Application Deadline: 26 June 2023

2. Postdoctoral Position

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

In this project, you will study the interaction between the atmosphere and the ice sheets of Greenland and Antarctica, by using a firn model. It describes both the compaction of firn, and the hydrology of meltwater moving through it. The model is coded in Fortran and runs in a Unix environment on a supercomputer. Data processing can be in R, Python, MatLab. You will work on the model which is in need of an improved treatment of meltwater percolation, refreezing, and grain size evolution. These improvements will allow us to make more confident projections for future ice-sheet mass loss and stability.

3. 02 Postdoctoral Position

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

You will make a major attempt to clarify Bohr’s position in the philosophical debates of his time and of today, with particular reference to the philosophy of physics, the philosophy of biology, and general philosophy of science. You will make extensive use of historical resources, especially those in the Niels Bohr Archive external link in Copenhagen, integrating historical and philosophical methods and insights. Among many other research questions, you will aim at clearing away the positivist cobwebs from Bohr’s image in the philosophy of physics, and investigating Bohr’s influence on organicism in theoretical biology, at exploring potential uses of Bohr’s notion of complementarity in contemporary debates in philosophy of science (e.g. on emergence and reduction).

5. Postdoctoral Position

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

We have recently received funding to leverage advances in pan-genomics and deep-learning to build predictive models to help understand why certain microbial variants are successful pathogens and what emerging variants to prioritise. The focus of this research is to be applied to the key foodborne pathogens Salmonella enterica and Escherichia coli. These globally important pathogens are responsible for considerable morbidity, mortality, and economic losses. There is a critical need to better understand the differential risk that different strain types pose through the food chain so targeted and proportional interventions that maximise public safety and minimise economic losses are developed.

Application Deadline: 10 July 2023

1. Postdoctoral Position in Anchoring Innovation

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The research programme in classical studies ‘Anchoring Innovation in the Philosophical Schools of the Empire’ studies the way in which ‘the new’ is made acceptable and understandable to relevant social groups in a process of ‘anchoring’. The new is frequently anchored in ‘cultural common ground’. In this work package of the Anchoring Innovation research programme, we study how the notion of cultural common ground (as opposed to personal common ground) can help explain different aspects of the coming-into-being of the Roman empire. The overarching issue for this WP, then, is precisely the role of cultural common ground as an anchor for self-understanding and identity-formation.

Application Deadline: 24 April 2023

2. Postdoctoral Position in Lettercraft and Epistolary Performance in Early Medieval Europe

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The project studies how early medieval societies used the letter and who were among its users. It approaches the early medieval letter as a performative medium that had to be carried through space and was read out aloud, translated and circulated in public. It thus sees the medieval letter as a far more inclusive medium than is commonly assumed on the basis of textual qualities. Literacy or social status were not required to participate in what the project calls lettercraft, i.e. the various performative actions (e.g. travelling, delivering, listening, speaking, negotiating, gossiping) that along with writing and reading made up epistolary communication. The project explores the practical mechanics of such communication, as well as its social and political uses, e.g. as an instrument of conflict-resolution and community-building.

3. Postdoctoral Position in Dynamics of fronts and coexistence states

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

Ecosystems are highly nonlinear systems characterized by a multiplicity of stable states, but seldom have the time to converge to these states. Their dynamics are rather affected by unpredictable natural drivers and human intervention to meet various functional needs. Multistability in variable environments is of deep concern because of the possible occurrence of state transitions involving abrupt declines in ecosystem function as tipping points are traversed, or gradual declines by front propagation.

Application Deadline: 31 March 2023

4. Postdoctoral Position in Community assembly and spatial pattern formation

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

RESILIENCE aims to fundamentally advance our understanding and predictions of tipping points and critical transitions in ecosystems and reveal how these can be evaded and even reversed through spatial pattern formation. RESILIENCE will develop a new theory for emerging resilience through spatial pattern formation and link this with real tipping-prone biomes undergoing accelerating global change: savanna and tundra.

8. Postdoctoral Position in Recognition and Acknowledgement to Strengthen Equality

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

RAISE draws on the assumption that to reduce structural racism, people (and the institutions they operate in) have to be aware of these underlying boundary making processes that reproduce structural racism and the role it has in lasting inequalities. Recognition and acknowledgment of these forms of injustice will contribute to social action for equality. The project will be the first in Europe to study the awareness of boundary making processes in reproducing structural racism and what collective actions contribute to break through such boundary making processes to reduce structural racism.
