The project LaW-BALANCE seeks to provide a better understanding of the legal framework of working life in transition and develop knowledge on how law can function as an instrument to achieve an inclusive working life and a well-functioning welfare state. The project centers around the concept of ‘work-life balance’, understood as an individual’s evaluation of their satisfaction with the fit of work and private life.

LaW-BALANCE focuses on two key instruments related to work-life balance: flexible work arrangements and the availability of paid leave. The project will also look at the protection against discrimination when claiming and enforcing these rights. Through in-depth analyses of Norwegian labour and social law – incl. studies on the impact of EU and EEA law, combined with comparative legal analyses of selected countries, LaW-BALANCE will break new ground in providing a better understanding of the legal framework that regulates modern working life.

5. PhD Programs in Clinical Science

The Mohn Center for Diabetes Precision Medicine is a national referral center for patients with diabetes and an internationally recognized center for precision medicine. This project proposes to use machine learning on rich biobank and registry information to better tailor the care provided to patients. The candidate will be given the opportunity to work on the unique Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort Study (MoBa), the Norwegian Diabetes Registry, and the Norwegian MODY registry.

In collaboration with the other members of the team, the candidate will be in charge of designing genetic, proteomic, and phenotypic risk scores for patients with diabetes. These scores will be used to locate patients on the spectrum of the different forms of diabetes, and when possible, adapt medical care accordingly. There is currently no way to assess the probability of good chlorite coats in un-drilled structures, something which makes deep prospects risky. Secondly, chlorite effectively mineralizes CO2. This effect will be important for large-scale CO2-storage, but we currently know little about the distribution of chlorite in subsurface reservoir rocks.

The PhD candidate will be supervised by, and work closely with, Associate Professor Dr. Silje Kristiansen, on research connected to climate change in the media and in public perception. Projects can focus on either media or public perception, or a combination of the two. Projects should focus on a Norwegian, Nordic, or international comparative perspective (including Norway) media context. Specific topics of relevance could address media and stakeholder communication and public perceptions concerning the environment, food, risk, science, behavioral and lifestyle change, and health.

10. PhD Programs in de novo drug design

Summary of PhD Positions:

Development of new pharmaceuticals requires efficient navigation of the vast chemical space. This may be achieved via heuristic computational methods, also termed “de novo” design methods, which may optimize toward desirable drug candidates without having to explore the complete chemical space. Via an interdisciplinary approach that includes informatics, computational chemistry, synthesis, computational biology, and biomedicine, the project team will develop radically new de novo molecular design methods. Specifically, the team will develop methods that integrate expert knowledge early on, via machine-learning models and on-the-fly human intervention in the otherwise automated process.

The new methods will be applied to design inhibitors of targets for cancer and antibiotics, the most promising of which will be synthesized and tested. The PhD student will be responsible for the de novo inhibitor design. This responsibility includes the computationally derived fitness, or scoring, function, for which the PhD project may also involve development of machine-learning models to speed up the design process. The PhD research fellow will work at the interface between informatics, chemistry, and biology, and be key to achieve interdisciplinary communication and research.
