1. Fully Funded PhD Position in ultrafast broadband-THz spectroscopy of perovskite materials

Summary of PhD Program:

Metal-halide perovskites (MHP) are optically active materials, which hold great promise as light-absorber (e.g. in photovoltaic devices and photodetectors) and as light-emitter (e.g. in LEDs). The material is both ionic and soft, meaning that electrons strongly ‘talk’ to the vibrations in the lattice. These lattice vibrations have frequencies in the 0-5 THz range and are thus thermally active at room temperature, meaning that the material is in a constant state of vibrational motion, which acts a source of dynamic disorder. This disorder is poorly understood, and can localize electrons on short length- and time scales.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Ancient Central Asian (Tarim Basin) Contact Linguistics

Summary of PhD Program:

In “Sogdian and Bactrian wanderers”, the linguistic influence of the Middle Iranian languages Sogdian and Bactrian in the Tarim Basin is to be investigated systematically. Both languages are not native to the Tarim Basin, but were extremely influential, as evidenced by many loanwords and names. It is known that Sogdian was spread by Sogdian traders, who also settled in different places throughout the Tarim Basin. Bactrian was the language of the Kuṣānas, but it is not well understood how exactly it reached into the Tarim Basin. While Sogdian and Bactrian influence in Tocharian is recognised, no systematic investigation exists. Although similar influence is to be expected in Khotanese, little research has been done on the topic.

1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Computer Science: Incentivizing Participation in Privacy-Enhancing Technologies

Summary of PhD Program:

Privacy-Enhancing Technologies (PETs), such as Secure Multi-party Computation (MPC) and Federated Learning (FL) allow parties to collaboratively analyze a collection of data partitions where each data partition is contributed by a different party (such as banks, or law enforcement agencies). Two facts about most PETs exist: (i) the output of PETs reveals some information about the parties’ private input sets (i.e., the computation result in FL or MPC), and (ii) various variants of PETs do not output the result to all parties, even in those PETs that do, not all of the parties are necessarily interested in it. Given these facts, a natural question arises: How can we incentivize parties that do not receive the result or do not express interest in it to participate in PETs?

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Geodynamics and Surface Processes

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD project aims to quantify and model the 3D structure and evolution of the Southern Pyrenees foreland fold and thrust belt and its associated surface process response. The structural style of foreland fold and thrust belts (FTB) as observed in the Southern Pyrenees is highly variable in width, structural style, and topography. Long term sediment input onto the foreland basin combines with short-term mass wasting events possibly resulting from large catastrophic seismic events. How short and long-term deposition affect the evolving thrust belt is unclear. The aim of this project is to understand how pre-existing extensional structure, distribution of the salt decollement horizons and climate driven short- and long-term changes in sediment input control evolving FTB structure and associated sediment routing systems.

Application Deadline: 15th September 2024

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Geodynamics and Surface Processes

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD project aims to quantify and model the 3D evolution of the southern Andes foreland foldand-thrust belt. The structural style of the foreland fold and thrust belt (FTB) as observed in the external parts of the Andes shows significant along strike variability in width, structural style, and topography that appears linked to pre-existing structure (i.e., the so-called broken foreland and extensional inheritance), to variations in available shale and / or salt decollements, and to variable sediment input. The relative importance of these controls, the consequence for 3D variations in FTB structure, and how the resulting topography controls sediment routing systems are unclear.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in high-resolution sedimentary dynamics of rifts during rapid climate change

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD project aims to investigate the stratigraphic signature of rift basins with respect to the role of short-term (<100 kyr) climate change on syn-rift depositionalsystems orthe coupling between climate-driven changes in surface processes (erosion/sediment supply) and rift deformation. The initial objective is to analyse the sedimentology and stratigraphy of an active rift where it is possible to constrain tectonic and climatic controls at high resolution, and where the sediment source areas are still preserved, such as the Corinth Rift, Greece. The PhD candidate will then simulate the stratigraphic architecture of syn-rift depositional systems using tectonic, climatic and sediment supply parameters derived from the Corinth Rift (Years 1 and 2).

Application Deadline: 15th September 2024

Apply now

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Geodynamics and Surface Processes

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD project aims to quantify and model the 3D response of active rift evolution to surface processes in the Corinth Rift system. The currently active Corinth Rift is one of the best documented rift systems on Earth with high resolution mapping of both onshore and offshore fault and basin structure constraining its evolution. The rift system localizes deformation in the Gulf of Corinth with earlier rift faults onshore towards the south. However, it is unclear what controls the migration of rift faults in time space and progressive localisation of deformation. Main objectives of this project are to understand how progressive shifting of depocenters towards the present Gulf feedbacks into rift fault formation and migration and how inheritance and surface processes control 3D rift fault growth, linkage, and stratigraphic architecture.

12. Fully Funded PhD Position in function of HOT regions using imaging and sequencing approaches

Summary of PhD Program:

HOT regions (High Occupancy Target) in the genome are regions with an unusual High Occupancy of (many) Transcription factors. These regions have been suggested to affect gene expression, but exactly how this works is not clear. We have recently identified HOT regions in the zebrafish genome and these all come together in nuclear space to form a large cluster. This may provide an important clue to the function of HOT regions as these large clusters could provide a source of transcription factors, or conversely, titrate away transcription factors from genes elsewhere in the genome. This has important implications in the context of gene regulation, especially in this early developmental window, when the embryo transitions from a transcriptionally silent to transcriptionally active state. The aim of this project is to investigate (i) how HOT regions seed the formation of TF clusters, (ii) how these clusters come together in nuclear space, and (iii) how HOT regions impact transcription. You will use state of the art sequencing and imaging approaches to address these questions.

Application Deadline: 1.10.24

13. Fully Funded PhD Position in transcription cluster organization by imaging

Summary of PhD Program:

There is accumulating evidence for a new gene expression paradigm, in which genes and transcription factors cooperate to create specialized transcription bodies. While these bodies have gained a lot of interest in recent years, they are generally hard to study because they are small, abundant, and short-lived. A few years ago, we discovered that in zebrafish embryos, transcription begins in two transcription bodies that are large, isolated, and long-lived (Hilbert et al., 2021). These provide us with an excellent system to investigate how transcription bodies form (Kuznetsova et al., 2023; Chabot et al., 2024) and what their role is in transcription regulation (Ugolini et al., 2024). The aim of this project is to understand the organization in time and space of transcription bodies using advanced microscopy (single molecule tracking, confocal imaging and spectroscopy, spinning disk) and data analysis methods to look at proteins, RNA and specific genes. As form often informs function, we expect that this will clarify how transcription bodies work and how their dynamics can affect transcription.

Future power systems driven by 100% renewable power plants (RPPs) will be extremely complex, uncertain environments with rapidly changing characteristics. The RPPs will be responsible for maintaining security of supply and stability of the power system in absence of conventional generators, coping with simultaneous uncertainties, e.g. weather, market, and grid uncertainties. RPPs will provide extensive system services, e.g. frequency reserves, reactive power, voltage control, virtual inertia and black start. One concern is that using traditional linear controllers in RPPs in systems with multiple uncertainties might jeopardize both their own and the system small- and large-signal stability.
