1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Information Technology

Summary of PhD Program:

In this PhD you will focus on designing new conversational AI models, based on recent foundation models. The key research question is how these state-of-the-art language models (including multi-modal versions) can be leveraged and adapted to create an AI-powered voicebot in a recruiting context. Key challenges are to achieve (1) controlled adaptation of the question sequence in the conversation; (2) personalization of dialog flow as well as language; and (3) improving engagement to ultimately limit drop-out of potential candidates. As an underlying building block to address (1) and (2), it is crucial to be able to incorporate external knowledge, in terms of domain knowledge (e.g., specific vocabulary, ontologies of skill sets and/or job titles), and conversation-specific information (e.g., on the interviewee, the organization, a predefined conversation structure).

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Electrical Engineering

Summary of PhD Program:

Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) is a 3D sensing technology based on laser light to measure the distance between an object and the sensor that holds great promise for allowing autonomous machines to see and navigate the world with very high precision. Typically, LiDAR designs comprise a multitude of moving parts (e.g., an assembly of lasers, optics, electronics, and detectors) on a mechanically rotating stage. The need to assemble and align all these parts leads to high costs and relatively low manufacturing volumes, while the wear and tear on the mechanical components limits long-term reliability, and all these factors have been hindering a wide adoption of this technology.

1. Fully Funded PhD Position in immunophysiology

Summary of PhD Program:

The lining of the uterus (the endometrium) has completely unique properties as it heals quickly during each menstrual cycle without scarring. During the fertile period of a woman’s life, this scarless healing in the uterus occurs more than 400 times, but the involved mechanisms that control it are still not known. During this process, immune cells constitute up to 70% of all cells in the endometrium, but their contributing role to endometrial turnover is largely unknown. Based on our previous discoveries where we found that both neutrophils and macrophages, the body’s most common immune cells, are important for healing damaged tissue, we now want to investigate what they do in the uterine lining, with a special focus on different subpopulations of the innate immune system.

17. Fully Funded PhD Position in Expanding the Chemical Universe: 3D Features Driving Next-Gen Synthesis Predictions

Summary of PhD Program:

Small molecule drug discovery projects are time-consuming and expensive. More than half of that cost and even more of the time of each project is taken up by chemical synthesis. This is in part driven by our inability to predict which reactions will work and which synthesis routes are most efficient. Therefore, forward synthesis prediction models are crucial for improving the efficiency of drug discovery and chemical synthesis. While these models have become increasingly accurate, they often focus on a limited set of reactions, struggling to generalize beyond well-established chemical space.

1. Fully Funded PhD Position in synthesis & evaluation of biobased, responsive and self-dispersible waterborne resins

Summary of PhD Program:

Plastics have their drawbacks: their production consumes energy and leads to greenhouse gas emissions; they are made from non-sustainable materials; they do not decompose; and less than 10% are recycled. Much progress has been made in making plastics more sustainable for larger applications. However, thin films, such as those used in coatings and inks, are lagging behind. The SusInkCoat project is changing that. Researchers are developing new materials, processes and applications to improve the durability, functionality and recyclability of coatings, thin films and inks. In addition, the consortium is training a new generation of chemical developers for whom sustainability and circularity are core values.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in top-down covalent adaptable and circular epoxy networks

Summary of PhD Program:

The European Green Deal is driving a shift towards a circular economy by 2050, challenging polymer science to revolutionize thermoset recycling. This project pioneers a completely new approach to make widely available epoxy-amine networks (e.g. wind mill blades) recyclable, while they are normally not recyclable. The key is a transformation of a bond present in the network to another bond with so-called reversible behavior upon a trigger (e.g. temperature), what makes recycling possible. This breakthrough in epoxy-amine recycling will be validated on coatings and composites.
