2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Computing

Summary of PhD Program:

Floating offshore wind turbines (FOWT) are widely seen as an essential part of many countries’ drive to achieve ‘net-zero’. However, the Levelised Cost of Energy of FOWT is still high compared with fixed foundation offshore wind, and therefore additional innovation is needed. A digital twin of a floating offshore wind turbine (FOWT) can provide a means to support this innovation, through everything from improved turbine and platform control, O&M strategy, fault detection and response etc. A digital twin is a model-based representation of a real assist trained or developed using real data, and for a FOWT can be designed and used with many different objectives. A validated digital twin can be used for conducting testing and research on new operations and maintenance procedures without the risk of experimenting on real wind turbines.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in offshore wind turbines

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD will explore the use of two techniques for overcoming this challenge, to enable the testing of high capacity FOWT. The first technique involves the wind turbine being replaced with thrusters which apply correctly scaled aerodynamic loads to the floating platform. The generated loads are controlled in real time using a surrogate model ‘trained’ using results from more complex numerical models. In the second approach COAST’s new 3 m x 2.8 m wind generator will be used to generate a wind field over the Ocean Basin. A model turbine will be installed on the scaled floating platform to generate the aerodynamic loads.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Applied Health Studies

Summary of PhD Program:

The typical approach to dietetic work in primary care involves outreach clinics and educational initiatives that are provided by dietitians working in community or acute settings, or by offering dietetic clinics inside GP offices taking referrals from GPs. More recently, dietitians have been able to train to become first contact practitioners; a diagnostic clinician able to assess and manage undifferentiated and undiagnosed presentations. However, the ways in which these practitioners operate has yet to be defined and the role in dietetics is in its infancy and requires evaluation.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Biomedical Sciences

Summary of PhD Program:

The aim of this PhD studentship is to build on our in vivo and in vitro work investigating our hypotheses surrounding the role of fibre and seeds in glycaemic response. This work will continue to investigate how changing the fruit and other ingredients added to smoothies influences glucose and insulin responses in healthy individuals, and collect observational data from the general population on typical smoothie consumption habits. This body of work seeks to contribute to current public health advice around smoothie consumption.

Application Deadline: 25 August 2023

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Dental Studies

Summary of PhD Program:

The overall hypothesis of the proposed study is that there is a bi-directional relationship between macrophages and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) cells promoting tumourigenesis that can be modelled in vitro. We propose that the presence of M2 like macrophages in a reconstituted tumour microenvironment can influence the invasive behaviour of OSCC cell lines and invasive OSCC cells influence the phenotype of macrophages.

1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Geological Sciences

Summary of PhD Program:

This project will explore how excavation disturbance might impact the properties of potential host rocks for the UK’s facility, to better understand how these fractures will develop and change over time and, how this will impact the flow of water and gas. We will use similar ‘analogue’ scenarios, such as road cuttings and railway tunnel walls to investigate the effect of disturbance on the rock, as well as developing new laboratory capability and undertaking novel flow-through experiments on rock samples to explore this at a smaller scale. We will develop a conceptual model to explain the mechanisms of excavation disturbance to allow it to be accounted for in safety assessments.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Role of regional sediment connectivity in coastal resilience

Summary of PhD Program:

We are offering a fully funded 3.5-year PhD position associated with the ‘Building Community Resilience on a Dynamic Coast by Making Space for Sand (MS4S)’ project, awarded to Cornwall Council (CC) under the £150M Environment Agency Resilience fund. The project recognises that allowing coastal sedimentary systems to adapt naturally to sea-level rise can improve coastal resilience. Therefore, instead of trying to adapt and manage natural systems, nature can be allowed to take its course and infrastructure and communities can be adapted to make space for sand. Coastal resilience is often considered synonymous with sediment abundance, as it is the presence of coastal sediment stores that controls the natural ability of the coast to adapt to storms and sea-level rise forcing.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Impact of sea-level rise on atoll islands

Summary of PhD Program:

We are offering up to three fully funded 3.5-year PhD positions associated with the research project ‘Natural adaptation of coral reef islands to sea-level rise offering opportunities for ongoing human occupation’. This UKRI-funded project, referred to as ARISE, involves a large research team comprising several academics, post-doc researchers, PhD students and project partners. The PhDs will contribute to the ARISE project by focussing on any of the following broad topics: (1) sediment production, delivery and pathways associated with the forereef – reef platform – atoll island system (sediment PhD); (2) impact of overwash processes on atoll island dynamics (overwash PhD); (3) numerical modelling atoll island hydro- and morphodynamics (modelling PhD); (4) dynamics of the atoll island groundwater table (groundwater PhD).

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Medical Studies

Summary of PhD Program:

Currently the molecular cause of Parkinson’s disease (PD) is not completely understood and no therapy is available to stop the disease progression. Accumulation of misfolded α-synuclein has been observed in many PD patients and can lead to severe midbrain dopaminergic neuron death. NEDD4-1 and NEDD4-2 are two related E3 ubiquitin protein ligases present in dopaminergic neurons that seem to be important to promote α-synuclein degradation and dopaminergic neuron maintenance.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Medical Studies

Summary of PhD Program:

Current cancer therapies are not efficient in targeting brain Cancer Stem Cells (CSCs), which can (re)-initiate and explain the frequent relapse of brain tumours. Brain tumours kill more children and adults under 40 than any other cancer. This project is dedicated to the identification and characterisation of mechanisms underlying brain tumourigenesis. It will focus on exposing genes and molecular programmes controlling the fate of brains CSCs that may drive these into differentiation, preventing tumour growth. Drosophila will be used to examine candidate gene function in brain tumour development, providing a unique opportunity to unravel their role in live brains. Translation of findings will be performed using patient-derived glioblastoma stem cells and glioma samples.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Medical Studies

Summary of PhD Program:

Glioblastoma remains as an incurable brain tumour, with a median survival of 15 months. Major reasons for treatment failure include tumour heterogeneity, transitional cellular states, and extensive infiltrative behaviour. Such clinically relevant properties are not recapitulated with traditional in vitro models, likely contributing to low success of clinical trials and highlighting the need for more translatable systems. Cerebral organoids, or mini-brains, is one of the most promising advances providing a physiological 3D substrate for glioma stem cells (GSC) to generate tumours that closely mirror patient’s GBMs. This PhD project aims to develop and characterize human cerebral organoids from iPSCs and use these as platform to generate infiltrative tumours with existent patient-derived GSCs. The model will be validated as a more clinically relevant system to study mechanisms of tumour formation and therapeutic resistance.

Application Deadline: 9 April 2023

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Medical Studies

Summary of PhD Program:

The proposed project will draw on a dataset of routine investigations undertaken in patients who subsequently developed a stroke and matched controls. It comprises MRI and CT brain, ambulatory ECG and echocardiogram data. The aim of the project will be, using this unique dataset comprising some 10,000 stroke cases and 30,000 controls, to build and optimise a machine learning model to predict future stroke risk based on investigations undertaken prior to the stroke occurring.
