1. Fully Funded PhD Position in evolutionary biomechanics of Darwin’s finches

Summary of PhD Program:

You will work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis in the field of functional morphology. You will focus on the cranial system of Darwin’s finches with the aim to reconstruct the evolutionary history of biomechanical traits to explain how the cranial systems of Darwin’s finches have diverged into biting specialists versus agile-beaked species, and how this impacts their feeding performance and songs. Your research will answer, amongst others, the following questions: can variation in beak kinematics explain differences in seed handling and song complexity in granivorous ground finches of the Galápagos? What are the biomechanical reasons for variation in beak movement frequencies? How did beak motion biomechanics change in the evolutionary history of Darwin’s finches?

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in unmixing microscopic X-ray and electron diffraction datasets

Summary of PhD Program:

The AXIS research group at the Faculty of Science (University of Antwerp) is seeking to fill one full-time (100%) doctoral scholarship holder in the area of “Unmixing of Microscopic X-ray and Electron Diffraction Datasets” under the supervision of Prof Koen Janssens together with Prof. Jo Verbeeck and Prof. Joke Hadermann of the EMAT Research group of the University of Antwerp. This activity is part of a collaborative project called “AutomatED”, funded by the Flemish government. X-ray diffraction (XRD) is one of the “gold standard” methods of structural analysis of solid materials. Next to determination of the crystal structure of, e.g. newly synthesized, compounds, it also allows for quantitative analysis of mixtures of (known) crystalline phases. Novel variants of XRD make use of intensity micro-/nanobeams of synchrotron radiation, permitting phase analysis and mapping of strongly heterogeneous systems in 2D/3D.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in ecology and evolution of the female microbiome through bioinformatics

Summary of PhD Program:

The human vaginal microbiome is crucial for women’s health and reproduction, but it is understudied compared to other human microbial environments such as the gut. Humans have a unique vaginal flora compared to other primate and mammal species, but it is currently unclear to what extent, and how, the typical human vaginal bacteria adapted to this environment on the evolutionary timescale. On the ecological timescale, within the lifetime of a woman, we do not yet know where vaginal bacteria are obtained and how transient they are in the vaginal community. Through the Isala project and its many spinoff projects, the Lebeer Lab generates large amounts of amplicon, genome, metagenome and (meta)transcriptiome sequencing data. The goal of this PhD project is to mine this in-house sequencing data, supplemented with publicly available datasets, to gain insights into the structure, dynamics and evolutionary history of the human female microbiome.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Molecular and Computational Neurogenomics

Summary of PhD Program:

The overarching goal of this proposal is to understand why and how dysregulation of omnipresent and constantly expressed ARS proteins leads to dying-back neurodegeneration and affects specifically the peripheral neurons (PNs). This neuronal population contains the most polarized cells in our body and their sophisticated morphology and function render them highly susceptible to degeneration. The preliminary data generated in-house as well as the available public data suggest mechanisms involving genetic, epigenetic and chromatin organisation factors governing the cell-type specific response to ARS mutations. Therefore, an integrative genome-wide cis-regulatory network analysis approaches, developed and employed in the Malysheva Lab, are required to reveal these mechanisms.

1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Biomedical Sciences

Summary of PhD Program:

You will work on an exciting project, aiming to decipher the role of spatial chromatin organization in alternative isoform choice in the human brain. Isoform expression is highly cell type-specific, drives cell fate trajectories and influences drug responses. Despite research traditionally focussing on alternative splicing, use of alternative transcription start sites (TSSs) and termination sites (TTSs) accounts for the majority of transcriptional diversity in humans. Yet little is known about the mechanisms governing alternative TSS and TTS choice. We hypothesise that chromatin organisation is a central coordinator of such cellular decision-making across distinct cell populations.

17. Fully Funded PhD Position in Quantitative in situ electron microscopy of metal halide perovskite materials

Summary of PhD Program:

Light detection and emission are crucial for displays, medical and security scanners. Given the societal relevance, there is an emerging need for novel opto-electronic materials with higher conversion efficiency and lower production cost. Metal halide perovskites (MHPs) are promising high-performance semiconductors due to their strong absorption and emission in a broad spectral range and their ease of manufacturing. So far, integration in opto-electronic devices was hampered by inherent stability issues such as the degradation from the optically active “black” phase into an inactive phase. In this project, we explore a fundamentally new route to stabilize the black phase under ambient conditions. The role of the PhD student is to develop and apply novel low-dose electron microscopy techniques and perform a quantitative analysis of the obtained data.
