2. Fully Funded PhD Position in physical safety of the female cricketer

Summary of PhD Program:

As the number of females participating in cricket continues to increase and knowledge of the differences between male and female physiology, biomechanics and other physical and psychological factors increases, there is a need to explore whether adaptations should be made to serve female participant safety best.

Previous studies looking at protection from impacts in cricket, especially in relation to the head, have directly informed international standards for cricket helmets. Ongoing studies are investigating the relationships between the nature of head collisions and reported concussion symptoms in players. Notable differences are observed here between female and male players.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Electrocatalytic ammonia synthesis for sustainable agriculture and energy storage applications

Summary of PhD Program:

A huge amount of nitrogen fixation to ammonia-based fertiliser is required annually to maintain global food supply; it is estimated that artificial fixation accounts for 50% of the terrestrial nitrogen cycle. Current synthesis routes use high temperature and pressure, with hydrocarbon feedstocks providing the required energy and hydrogen. This consumes 2% of global energy production and accounts for 1% of all human carbon dioxide emissions. An efficient, electrically powered, carbon-free ammonia synthesis process is therefore urgently required. Such a process is also key in realising the vision of ammonia as a truly green hydrogen/energy vector.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Carbon emissions from grass roots to youth sport: a gendered analysis

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD project is a part of the Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship looking to support the sport, health and wellbeing agenda. This opportunity forms a suite of five projects focusing on sports for climate action and nature. It is becoming increasingly accepted that there is a bidirectional relationship between sport and the climate, in that sport both affects and is affected by the climate system. Though research on the varied ways in which climate change impacts sport (and vice-versa) is increasing, in terms of the research on sport-related carbon emissions, this has almost exclusively focused on professional and elite-level sport, ignoring the far more active and populated activities at the grassroots and youth levels (Wilby et al. 2022).

In order to reduce our impact on the environment including emissions and energy consumption, the efficiency of aerodynamic and fluid systems must be maximised. However, components often see sub-optimal input – or boundary – conditions which can impact their efficiency, effectiveness and lifespan. This project will use initially use fundamental, canonical flows to develop a methodology for designing desired flow structures or removal of flow structures. The researcher will then work together with the project sponsor to apply the methodology to a number of industrial flow systems, in order to improve component and system efficiency.

10. 03 Fully Funded PhD Position in Inclusive Engineering

Summary of PhD Program:

Presently, there are still, lower proportions of engineering students and professionals that are female; with declared disability; from low-socioeconomic; or ethnic minority backgrounds. The Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) challenges are compounded by increased risk of poorer Higher Education outcomes, higher unemployment, and reduced translation into management. It is anticipated the next decade will bring further challenges given some of these groups have also been hardest hit by the Covid pandemic. Tackling engineering skills shortages is a business imperative for the future of engineering. To inspire a diverse pool of future engineers, research needs to span education, industry and end-users fulfilling the “if you can see it, you can be it” concept.

11. 03 Fully Funded PhD Position in Engineering

Summary of PhD Program:

Initial research will seek to develop bench-marking data within engineering, specifically at the engineering discipline level, to understand the differences within and between sectors. The 3 PhD students working together will enable the research to compare and contrast multiple engineering sectors considering wide-ranging axes of disparity (e.g. gender, disability, race etc) and intersectional diversity (e.g. interconnected relationships between aspects of diversity and disparity). The research aims to develop a framework for the widespread adoption of bench-marking, monitoring and impact assessment alongside the development of legacy demographical understanding.

12. 02 Fully Funded PhD Position in Engineering

Summary of PhD Program:

This is an open call PhD focusing on the development of virtual reality simulations for accessible, inclusive, experiential and flexible training products and services, with emphasis on transitioning into industry – including evaluation of skills required by industry for success – to promote diversity and inclusion in transition to and retention within industrial settings. An example proposal might be: “Investigating virtual reality simulation and remote laboratories for levelling up training for and transition into industrial settings.” The Supervisory Team, in this example, would be Dr Sheryl Williams and Dr Elizabeth Ratcliffe.

13. Fully Funded PhD Position in Seeing extreme winds

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD project will harness the power of developments in image analysis to solve the real-world challenge of estimating wind hazard. This is an exciting opportunity to apply state-of-the-art techniques (e.g. machine learning) to video clips of moving trees, and conduct corresponding fieldwork to develop new understanding of the natural environment and atmospheric processes at work. At the core of the work will be a campus-scale study, with a variety of CCTV camera data linked to data from the university’s weather station. Initially, the project will use data already collected in a pilot study and existing particle-tracking code to create a local (micro-scale) map of wind hazard. There is clear space for a student to excel by creating a step-change in the image analysis techniques.

14. Fully Funded PhD Position in Representing the underrepresented

Summary of PhD Program:

The sports industry accounts for about 1% of global carbon emissions, mainly focused at the highly visible elite level of sport such as mega sporting events and major leagues, providing opportunities for sport to be an important driver and influencer of action on climate change. And yet sport is also vulnerable to climate change, with 120 out of 180 Olympic nations potentially unable to facilitate sport in the future due to projected changes in environmental conditions.

15. Fully Funded PhD Position in Physiological and nutritional interventions

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD project is a part of the Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship looking to support the sport, health and wellbeing agenda. This opportunity forms a suite of five projects focusing on sports for climate action and nature. The sports industry accounts for about 1% of global carbon emissions, mainly focused at the highly visible elite level of sport such as mega sporting events and major leagues, providing opportunities for sport to be an important driver and influencer of action on climate change. Sport is also vulnerable to climate change, with 120 out of 180 Olympic nations potentially unable to facilitate sport in the future due to projected changes in environmental conditions.

16. Fully Funded PhD Position in Perception and impact of human factors for defence decision making systems

Summary of PhD Program:

The complexity of decision making in the Defence Electromagnetic Environment (EME) context is increasing. Some drivers for this include the complexity of systems; too much/ not enough/ uncertain data; required speed of decision making. For decision making to be implemented successfully (at both operational and wider enterprise level) we need to appreciate perception and potential impact (trust, situational awareness, wellbeing) for all stakeholders.

18. Fully Funded PhD Position in High resolution gamma detectors using superconducting materials

Summary of PhD Program:

Accurate analysis of radioactive material is extremely important in the context of nuclear forensics – a vital contributor to law enforcement, intelligence gathering, and anti-terrorism activities relating to trafficked nuclear material. The key performance criteria for a gamma spectrometer for nuclear forensics is its energy resolution – which can make the difference between identifying the source of illegal material or this remaining unknown. This project will capitalise on advances in superconducting devices to design and test the next generation of high-resolution gamma detectors for forensic applications.
