2. Fully Funded PhD Position in atmospheric chemistry

Summary of PhD Program:

The research project aims at better understanding the aging processes of atmospheric aerosol particles. During photochemical aging, the viscosity of aerosol particles may increase from a liquid to a glassy or solid-state, thereby significantly altering their environmental impact. However, it is unknown whether photochemical aging favors viscosity increase, nor whether there are synergetic effects between photolytic aging and aging through the uptake of gas-phase oxidants such as ozone. The project’s focus will be comparing the two aging processes, photolysis and ozonolysis individually and in combination on single droplets levitated in an electrodynamic balance (EDB) using proxy reactions systems for organic aerosol particles.

11. Fully Funded PhD Position in role of particle size and mixing state for ice nucleation on mineral dust

Summary of PhD Program:

Ice-nucleating particles (INPs) represent only a tiny fraction of the atmospheric aerosol, but they are key actors in cloud processes including precipitation formation, as they initiate the ice phase in clouds. Although mineral dusts are probably the most important and best established type of atmospheric INPs, there are still major unknowns that preclude a reliable prediction of ice crystals forming on them. Different factors have been identified that influence their freezing temperatures. Apart from the mineral type, these are particle size, interactions with solutes and water, adsorption of organic molecules, and freezing mode. Yet, some of these factors do not seem to matter in general, but only for some mineral types. Therefore, attempts to generalize them to all types of mineral INPs produce conflicting results.

2. 02 Fully Funded PhD Position in integrated photonics with disordered materials for classical and quantum devices

Summary of PhD Program:

We will develop photonic assemblies made of nanocrystals or sol-gel chemistry to reach refractive indices and electro-optic strength comparable to bulk crystals. Such ductile materials will be then soft nanoimprinted with reusable large surface area polymer molds for structuring the PICs without the etching complexity of metal-oxides. The counter-intuitive perception that nonlinear optical effects are limited in random assemblies of nanocrystals gives rise to puzzling questions that will be investigated.

Can those assemblies be used as a testbed to demonstrate strong light confinement and efficient frequency conversion without phase matching? Is there a method to control the orientation of the crystals during the fabrication and to design entangled photon sources? Can we build scalable and efficient PICs for classical and quantum applications?

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in freezing of soft materials

Summary of PhD Program:

This thesis topic is about understanding how damage occurs when soft, wet materials are frozen. Despite this being a very common problem, it is still surprisingly poorly understood. Most people think that freezing causes damage because water expands as it freezes. However, this effect plays a very minor role: if we replace water with a liquid that shrinks as it freezes, it still causes damage. This is a problem ranging from frost heave damage to infrastructure, to storing food in freezers, to cryopreservation, and to life at low temperatures.

17. Fully Funded PhD Position in proxy development – lipid biomarkers

Summary of PhD Program:

Currently, soils store a large fraction of the CO2 emitted into the atmosphere. However, whether they will continue to do so in the future is unclear, as soil fertility potentially limits the amount of primary production (carbon fixation) and belowground carbon storage. Current experimental approaches reveal a complex interaction between the above- and belowground ecosystem, and its chemical environment. A historical perspective, i.e. looking at past changes in soil fertility and carbon storage, can elucidate these processes on timescales that exceed experimental approaches (decades to millennia).

While changes in atmospheric CO2 and climate are well constrained using a combination of direct measurements and estimates based on proxies, we currently have no methods to reconstruct soil fertility through time. In this project, you will develop biomarker lipid proxies that allow quantifying soil mineral fertility, building on current research that highlights the dependency of GDGT lipids on major soil exchangeable cations: free hydrogen, exchangeable calcium and exchangeable iron.
