HLI provides training in the principles, practices, and psychology of effective, ethical and visionary leadership. We also train Hansen Fellows to be effective communicators and public speakers.

In recent years, we have begun to expand our focus to gender issues in leadership as well. The intense, 24/7 face to face community of our three-week program becomes a path to a vibrant virtual hub, where Hansen alum engage, connect, and mutually support each other’s projects of peace and community building.

What are Evaluative Statements?

These are letters of reference (written on the organization’s letterhead) from a person who knows you well and can explain why you are a qualified applicant for the program. All applicants must submit two (2) evaluative statements:

1. From an academic adviser or professor. This person should be able to evaluate your English proficiency and;

2. From an NGO or community organization with whom you have worked.

Click on the Request Sections button on your application dashboard to submit the names and email addresses for your referees. The system will send them an email with a link to your application.

They will be asked to complete a short questionnaire and be given directions on how to upload their letters of recommendation.

If the letters are not in English, they should have them translated and can submit both the original and the translated versions. In order to give your referees ample time to reply, you should request these recommendations as soon as you begin the application.

Do I need a U.S. visa to submit an application?

No, you do not need a U.S. visa to apply for the program. If you are selected as a participant, we will provide all the necessary documentation to assist in your U.S. visa application, including a letter of acceptance, a letter defining our financial support, a DS-2019 issued by the University of San Diego and a receipt for your paid SEVIS fees.

How do I verify my English proficiency?

When you submit a name and email address for your academic referee, they will automatically receive an email with instructions to log in and answer a questionnaire to complete to verify your English proficiency.

This verification will be submitted with their recommendation form. This is an automatic process; there is no extra information for you to provide.
