2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Computational micromechanical modelling of ‘Green Steels’

Summary of PhD Program:

PLEDGE is a challenging research project funded by the Dutch government and Materials innovation institute M2i. It aims to understand the consequences of ‘green’ steel making (i) using a hydrogen-based production process and (ii) with an increased usage of recycled (scrap) material. The mechanical properties of any steel rely strongly on second-phase particles in the metallic microstructure, yet, the amount and distribution of second-phase particles can vary considerably in green steels. Therefore, the goal of the PLEDGE project is to deeply understand and manage the microscopic deformation mechanisms in the presence of second-phase particles, to enable future green steel making. To address this goal, a multi-scale integrated experimental-numerical micromechanical approach is adopted.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Mitochondrial Protein Quality Control during Ageing

Summary of PhD Program:

The PhD project in the lab of Andreas Kohler focuses on the quality control of mitochondrially-encoded proteins. Mitochondria are vital cellular organelles originating as endosymbionts and hence, containing their own genome. Encoded proteins are major building blocks of the respiratory chain, important for cellular energy homeostasis and thus, for cellular functionality. To maintain cellular health during ageing, protein quality control (PQC) of mitochondrial proteins is essential. Although we have a growing understanding of how PQC of proteins encoded by nuclear DNA works, PQC mechanisms of mitochondrially-encoded proteins remain elusive. Our research aims to decipher the molecular principles of these PQC mechanisms in health, age, and disease by using Saccharomyces cerevisiae as major model systems.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Exploring cardiovascular genetics in mid versus later life to improve understanding of biological mechanisms and clinical risk prediction

Summary of PhD Program:

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) in the UK increases in prevalence from 5% in middle age to over 20% in people aged 75+. Age affects many clinical features as well as the impact of these risk factors on CVD and resulting outcomes. 1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Side-channel analysis countermeasure of Quantum Safe implementations on hardware (aims to FPGA)

Summary of PhD Program:

The conventional cryptography is claimed will be broken due to the appearance of Quantum Computer. Various PostQuantum crypto (PQC) or Quantum Safe algorithms are proposed and went to standardization like Lattice-based CRYSTALS-Kyber. However, the implementation of those algorithms in software leaks sensitive information (like private key) to side-channel (like electromagnetic field, power consumption and execution time) and can be revealed in less than 50 traces (50 decryption times) with the help of machine learning or using conventional correlation power analysis (CPA).

Application Deadline: 28 February 2025

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Explainable machine learning (ML) models for side-channel analysis (SCA)

Summary of PhD Program:

The crypto algorithm is safe in theory, but their implementations still leak information to side-channel and can be attacked with Differential Power Analysis (DPA), Correlation Power Analysis (CPA) and state-of-the-art machine learning (ML). Even though SCA countermeasure method like masking is applied to make the implementations safer under DPA and CPA, ML can learn the features of the mask and the sensitive data and be able to attack the protected implementations. The training and attacking process of ML does not show what and where are those features come from, and so cannot explain how a ML model can successfully combine those leakage in analysis.

18. Fully Funded PhD Position in Enhancing the Parallel Scalability of Molecular Dynamics Simulations with Machine Learning-Based Prediction

Summary of PhD Program:

The goal of this project is to investigate, design and evaluate algorithms for accelerating MD simulations based on the estimation or prediction of long-range field values in MD simulations. The algorithms are to minimize end-to-end execution time while minimizing the simulation error. The field values evolve non-linearly and it is an open question what models track this progression accurately. Machine learning models are broadly a feasible class of models and the aim is to identify suitable models and evaluate them in terms of their accuracy and inference overhead.

19. Fully Funded PhD Position in High-Performance Graph Processing

Summary of PhD Program:

Many disciplines rely heavily on the efficient analysis of graph-structured data, e.g., bio-informatics and computational genomics, cybersecurity, epidemiology, biology, and social sciences. Graphs can become very large, prompting the use of clusters of computers to achieve fast turn-around times. However, clusters pose multiple challenges to efficient computation, in particular for graph analytics. Very often, graphs have skewed degree distributions, making it hard to partition them properly across the nodes of the cluster. Poor partitioning inflates network communication volume, increases workload imbalance and potentially results in redundant work.

21. Fully Funded PhD Position in Signature Learning for Object Detection Using Attention Mechanisms

Summary of PhD Program:

This project will develop an attention-based model for object detection that learns distinct object signatures directly from unsegmented data. Traditional object recognition methods rely heavily on segmentation to isolate objects within images or videos, which can be challenging in cluttered or occluded environments. This project aims to bypass segmentation by leveraging attention mechanisms that focus on the most relevant regions and features, enabling the model to recognize objects based on their unique “signatures.”

24. Fully Funded PhD Position in Precomputation Attack Resilient Password based Authentication System Design

Summary of PhD Program:

Resiliency and Survivability at the face of real world cyber attack are in high demand as customers are demanding system designs that assure continued safety and functionality during and after systems are compromised by cyber attacks. In the context of password based authentication systems, resiliency and survivability at the face of server compromise is a big challenge and no existing scheme can withstand the damage once the server is compromised. The project investigate password authenticated key exchange (PAKE) mechanism of authentication and provide commercially viable solution that can withstand the attack followed by server compromise so as to uphold resiliency and survivability.

25. Fully Funded PhD Position in Secure Record Linkage

Summary of PhD Program:

Record linkage is the technique which aims to link the records from two or more distinct sources. This has been commonly adopted in biomedical informatics to link electronic health records (EHRs) of the same patient in different medical institutions, e.g., for building the longitudinal health profile of the patient or for de-duplicating individual records in multiple databases, etc. Due to the concerns of patients’ confidentiality and/or the institutional data sharing policy, the patient records, in particular the identity keys (e.g., the patients’ name, SSN, address, etc.), cannot be directly shared with the other party.

26. Fully Funded PhD Position in Secure searching over sensitive data in a multi-client setting

Summary of PhD Program:

With the advent of cloud computing, many companies and individuals outsource their data and computation to the public cloud. E-medical record is a sensitive medical data which when stored in public cloud brings a variety of risks like of data leakage to the untrusted cloud server, unauthorized access or modification operations. To assure the confidentiality of the data, the data owner needs to encrypt the sensitive data before uploading to the third party. Yet, issues like encrypted data search, flexible access and control on sensitive data have also remained the most significant challenges.

27. Fully Funded PhD Position in Self-supervised summarisation of hyperspectral image data

Summary of PhD Program:

Hyperspectral imaging is an important technology in medicine, biosciences, materials sciences, remote sensing, astronomy, chemical analysis, and many other areas. Whilst the cameras that we are familiar with from day-to-day use acquire images that have three colour channels (Red, Green, Blue, or RGB), hyperspectral imagers acquire images with tens, hundreds, thousands, or even millions of colour channels. The images they acquire can reveal the world around us in tremendous details, for example, by allowing the chemical composition of an object to be understood at the molecular level, or by identifying subtle differences in the “colour” of vegetation that might allow the fertility of farmland (for example) to be understood from satellite images.
