Additionally, an undergraduate degree in accounting or a related field is often preferred. While specific GPA requirements may vary from year to year and among applicants, competitive candidates often have a strong academic record, including a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher in their undergraduate and master’s coursework.

PhD Funding Coverage

Bentley University’s PhD in Accounting program offers various funding opportunities to support doctoral candidates throughout their studies:

1. Doctoral Fellowships: During the admissions process, all applicants are considered for doctoral fellowships. These fellowships include:

  • A stipend ranging from $35,000 to $40,000 per year, depending on the specific fellowship awarded.
  • A full tuition scholarship.
  • Individual student health insurance coverage.
  • Funding is guaranteed for four years, with a fifth-year contingent upon satisfactory progress in the program.

2. Rauch Doctoral Fellowships: Thanks to the generosity of the Rauch family, two students are supported by Rauch Doctoral Fellowships. These fellowships are awarded to top incoming students who demonstrate great promise in their academic field. The benefits include a $40,000 annual stipend, which continues until graduation as long as the student maintains good academic standing.

3. Bentley PhD Fellowships: Admitted students who are not recipients of the Rauch Doctoral Fellowship receive a Bentley PhD Fellowship, which includes an annual stipend of $35,000. Like the Rauch Fellowship, the Bentley PhD Fellowship continues until graduation, provided the student maintains good academic standing.

4. Conference and Research Support: The PhD program at Bentley provides financial support for doctoral students to participate in domestic and international conferences. Additionally, students seeking research support can apply for funding directly from the PhD Program, and support may also be available from on-campus centers, such as the Center for Women and Business.

5. External Doctoral Funding Opportunities:

5a. Accounting Doctoral Scholar’s Program (ADS): Bentley is part of a select group of schools participating in the ADS Program. This initiative, created by major accounting firms in collaboration with the AICPA Foundation, aims to increase the number of highly qualified accounting professors. Qualified participants can receive an additional $40,000 in financial support.

5b. AICPA Fellowship for Minority Doctoral Students: This fellowship program is dedicated to increasing the visibility of CPAs from diverse backgrounds in college and university classrooms. It provides annual fellowships of $12,000 to full-time minority accounting scholars who show significant potential as accounting educators.

5c. AICPA William (Bill) Ezzell Scholarship: In honor of Bill Ezzell’s passion for encouraging the next generation of CPAs, the AICPA Foundation established this scholarship. It offers financial assistance to CPAs pursuing their Ph.D.
